Men's Lax Loses Close on to Lyons at Home

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers hosted former NEWMAC foe Wheaton College on Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium in a non-conference game prior to their conference opener against Southern Maine on Friday evening at home. The Buccaneers fell to a second half comeback by the Lyons, 11-9.

Maritime

  • Mitchell Maida scored a game-high four goals in the loss.
  • Braeden Kosiwicz scored twice, Daniel KaneMatt Mullaney, and Cooper Barrett each scored once.
  • Gage Coolahan recorded two assists, Evan Doig had one. Maida, and Kosiewicz each added one.
  • Brian Rosher picked up a game-high eight ground balls and won 12-of-23 faceoffs. 
  • Defensively, Patrick Doyle caused four turnovers, Jack Scrier caused two.
  • In total, the Bucs picked up 33 ground balls, were successful on 22-of-25 clear attempts, won 12-of-23 faceoffs and took a total of 52 shots.

Wheaton

  • Charlie Racine, Mike McLaughlin, and Charlie Krause each scored three times. Shane Ross added two goals.
  • Krause assisted on two goals. Racine and Jack Board each had one helper.
  • Racine picked up a team-high five ground balls and won 11-of-23 faceoffs. 
  • Defensively, Jacob Wharton caused four turnovers.
  • In total, Wheaton picked up 24 ground balls, were successful on 19-of-22 clears, won 11-of-23 faceoffs, and took a total of 34 shots.

 

How It Happened

There were only two goals scored in the first quarter, one by each team. Maritime scored first just over two minutes into the game from the stick of Kane. Two minutes later, Wheaton tied the game on a McLaughlin goal. The teams finished the first tied at 1-1.

In the second, Wheaton scored first at 10:14 to make it 2-1. Maritime went on to score three unanswered goals from Maida at 9:36, Mullaney at 8:46, and Kosiewicz at 7:05 to take a 4-2 lead. Wheaton closed out the half with two goals of their own from Racine and Ross. The Bucs and Lyons went to the break tied at 4-4.

In the third quarter, Maritime scored the first two goals from Maida and Kosiewicz to take a 6-4 lead. The Lyons scored the next four, including two powerplay goals, to take an 8-6 lead going into the fourth.

Maritime pulled within one on a Maida power play goal at 11:03 of the fourth. Up 8-7, Wheaton extended their advantage back to two goals on a McLaughlin score. The teams continued to trade goals the rest of the way with the Bucs scoring at 5:18 from Maida, Racine scoring for the Lyons at 2:24, Barrett scored for the Bucs at 1:06 and with the Bucs attempting to tie the game bac up, McLaughlin scored again for Wheaton to put the game away. The Lyons left the Bay with an 11-9 win over the Bucs.
