Women's Soccer Receives NSCAA Silver Team Ethics And Sportsmanship Award
The Massachusetts Maritime women’s soccer team was recognized earlier today by National Soccer Coaches of America with the Silver Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award after completing the 2014 season without receiving a red card and less than five yellow cards for the campaign. The NSCAA honor is the third straight for the Buccaneers, who received the Gold Ethics accolade in each of the last two seasons of play.
The NSCAA honored a total of 125 programs (both men’s and women’s) at all levels of competition with their respective Gold, Silver or Bronze version of the Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award, which recognizes teams that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game as reflected by the numbers of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season.
Head Coach Ray Cabral’s Buccaneers were one of 47 NCAA Division III women’s programs to be honored by the NSCAA with the Silver Ethics Award, as Massachusetts Maritime and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts represented the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference on that list.
“The foundation for success that our student-athletes have built for the women’s soccer program has been crafted meticulously through hard work, dedication and fair play, and I am pleased to congratulate Coach Cabral and our young women on this achievement,” Massachusetts Maritime Director of Athletics Bob Corradi says of this year’s honor. “The lessons they are learning and teaching are ones that reflect the core values of our entire program at the Academy—doing things the Buccaneer way.”
Massachusetts Maritime has ranked among the national leaders in Division III in fewest fouls committed and cards received in its seven-year varsity history. Cabral guided the Buccaneers to three triumphs and three ties in 16 matches this fall, and junior tri-captain Katie Levesque (Wilmot, N.H./Kearsarge Regional) earned first team all-MASCAC and all-NSCAA New England Regional accolades for her performance in goal for a second straight season.
