McGrath's Last Second Equalizer Lifts Women's Soccer To 2-2 MASCAC Draw At Fitchburg State

MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME WOMEN’S SOCCER

Saturday, September 27, 2014

Elliot Field, Fitchburg, Mass.

FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 2, FITCHBURG STATE 2 (DOUBLE OVERTIME)

FITCHBURG, Mass. --  Senior Mariah McGrath’s (Mansfield, Mass.) goal with 57 seconds remaining in regulation lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 2-2 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer double overtime draw with Fitchburg State in a league match played at Elliot Field.

Junior Emily Behen (Danvers, Mass.) staked the visiting Buccaneers (1-4-3, 0-1-1 MASCAC) to a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute of action with an unassisted goal (her third of the season), but the host Falcons (2-6-1, 0-1-1 MASCAC) evened matters in the 32nd minute when sophomore Abbey Norden (Belchertown, Mass.) converted a feed from senior Sierra Santos (Lakeville, Mass.).  Sophomore Victoria Floeck (East Taunton, Mass.) gave Fitchburg State a 2-1 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining in regulation with her third tally of the season on a pass from fellow sophomore Samantha Zina (Abington, Mass.), but McGrath forced the extra sessions for Massachusetts Maritime with her first collegiate marker from the left side.  Both teams had chances to win in the overtime periods but couldn’t capitalize, as each squad had two shots on goal over the final 20 minutes of action.

Junior Katie Levesque (Wilmot, N.H.) made 15 saves, including 10 in the final 45 minutes of regulation, in the draw for Massachusetts Maritime, while senior Kelsey Ford (Franconia, N.H.) made three stops in the tie for Fitchburg State.  The Falcons outshot the Buccaneers by a 40-6 margin (18-5 on goal) while holding a 15-2 advantage in corner kicks for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Medford, Mass. on Wednesday evening to take on Fisher in a non-league outing that begins at 6:00 p.m., while Fitchburg State travels to Henniker, N.H. on Tuesday evening to square off with New England College in a non-league match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
