FINAL: SALEM STATE 6, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 0
BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Senior Megan Saffie (Dracut, Mass.) netted a pair of goals to lead Salem State to a 6-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.
Sophomore Amy Griffith (Middleton, Mass.) gave the visiting Vikings (2-2-1, 1-0 MASCAC) the only tally they would need just 1:08 into the contest, and sophomore Kelly Birchmore’s (Swampscott, Mass.) penalty kick conversion in the 61st minute extended that margin to 2-0. Saffie struck for both of her markers in a 4:11 span, as she converted respective feeds from senior Kaitlyn Quigley (Santa Maria, Calif.) in the 67th minute and sophomore Leah Wood (Loveland, Ohio) in the 71st minute to give the visitors a 4-0 edge. Sophomore Alysha Brunelle (Auburn, Mass.) added a goal and an assist in the closing 5:53 of action for the Vikings, as she set up freshman Taylor-Victoria Boucher (Worcester, Mass.) in the 85th minute before scoring on a pass from freshman Kara Digiacomo (Peabody, Mass.) with 2:32 remaining to account for the final score.
Sophomore Rachel Ledbetter (Dracut, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Salem State with a three-save effort, while sophomore Katie Levesque (Wilmot, N.H.) made 11 stops in the setback for the host Buccaneers (1-2-2, 0-1 MASCAC), as the Vikings outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 25-4 margin while holding an 11-2 edge in corners for the afternoon.
Massachusetts Maritime heads into Boston on Tuesday afternoon to take on Wheelock in a non-league outing at Wentworth’s Sweeney Field beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Salem State hosts Eastern Connecticut in a non-league match on Wednesday evening in Salem, Mass. that begins at 7:00 p.m.
