Sweeney Field, Boston, Mass.

FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 3, WHEELOCK 0

BOSTON, Mass. --  Senior Lauren Salem (Westfield, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to back a six-save effort in net from sophomore Katie Levesque (Wilmot, N.H.) that led Massachusetts Maritime to a 3-0 non-league college women’s soccer victory over Wheelock Tuesday afternoon at Sweeney Field.

Sophomore Emily Behen (Danvers, Mass.) gave the visiting Buccaneers (2-2-2) the only tally they would need just 5:11 into the contest with her first goal of the season from in front of the cage, and Salem extended that margin to 2-0 just 8:25 later with her third marker of the campaign from 15 yards out and a 2-0 Massachusetts Maritime advantage at the break.  Salem’s second score of the day with just under five minutes remaining iced the triumph for the visitors, who have already matched their win total of last season and continued the best start in the program’s six-year varsity history.

Levesque made four of her six saves over the final 45 minutes of action to notch her third shutout of the season and fourth of her career for the Buccaneers, while freshman Erin Rice (Windsor, Vt.) made 11 stops in the setback for the host Wildcats (0-7) as Massachusetts Maritime outshot Wheelock by a 27-10 margin while holding a 12-4 advantage in corners for the afternoon.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Fitchburg State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference outing on Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at Noon, while Wheelock entertains Curry in a non-league match on Thursday afternoon at Sweeney Field that begins at 3:00 p.m.
