FINAL:              MCLA 2, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 0

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Jennifer Ferrari (Westfield, Mass.) and freshman Natalie Caney (Belchertown, Mass.) netted goals in the final 3:12 of the opening half to lift MCLA to a 2-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Ferrari’s direct kick conversion in the 42nd minute gave the visiting Trailblazers (8-9, 3-4 MASCAC) the only tally they would need on the day, and Caney provided an insurance marker with 1:49 remaining in the opening half on an unassisted breakaway that enabled her to tie Roberta Smith’s school record of 17 goals by an MCLA freshman set in 1987.

Junior Danielle Heinsohn (Norfolk, Mass.) picked up her seventh win of the season with two saves in the opening 70-plus minutes of play for MCLA, while freshman Kathryn Daly (South Cairo, N.Y.) made one stop over the last 19-plus minutes for the visitors.  Sophomore Katie Levesque (Wilmot, N.H.) made 10 saves in the setback for the host Buccaneers (4-8-3, 0-7 MASCAC), as the Trailblazers outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 25-6 margin overall (12-3 on goal) while taking seven of the eight corners in the contest.

Today’s match concluded Massachusetts Maritime’s season, as the Buccaneers posted their highest win total in the program’s six-year varsity history.  MCLA earned the sixth seed in the upcoming Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships and will travel to third-seeded Bridgewater State for a quarterfinal round match on Tuesday.
