WORCESTER, Mass. -- Senior Christina Vernaci (Saugus, Mass.) netted a pair of goals to lead Worcester State to a 6-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Coughlin Field.
The host Lancers (10-3-1, 4-1 MASCAC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead just 15:12 into the contest, as freshman Therese Morss (Marion, Mass.) gave Worcester State the only goal it would in the seventh minute on an assist from senior Nikki Scott (Berlin, Mass.) before setting up fellow freshman Sarina Lathrop’s (Hopedale, Mass.) marker in the 16th minute of action. Freshman Cassie Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass.) extended the Lancers’ edge to 3-0 in the 23rd minute before Vernaci tallied both of her goals in just over six minutes of play in the 33rd and 39th minutes, respectively. Sophomore Laura Maunsell’s (Medford, Mass.) marker with 1:53 remaining in the opening half closed out the scoring for the hosts on the afternoon, as she joined Morss with a goal and an assist in the triumph for Worcester State, which also received single helpers from junior Courtney Pellon (Uxbridge, Mass.) and freshman Shelby Archer (Dayville, Conn.).
Senior Angieszaka Sychtysz (Warren, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for the Lancers without making a save in the first half of play, while freshman Danielle Grunbaum (Marlboro, Mass.) registered a second half stop for the hosts. Senior Emily Welsh (Shelton, Conn.) made seven saves in net in the setback for the visiting Buccaneers (2-10, 0-5 MASCAC) as Worcester State outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 23-5 margin.
Massachusetts Maritime heads to Boston on Tuesday afternoon to take on UMass Boston in a non-league match that begins at 3:30 p.m., while Worcester State will be idle until next Saturday morning when the Lancers host Salem State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference outing at Coughlin Field that begins at 11:00 a.m.
