BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Senior Suzanne Jensen (Framingham, Mass.) factored in on all four scores with a pair of goals and two assists to lead Curry to a 4-2 non-league college women’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.
All of the scoring in the contest took place in the opening half of action, as sophomore Alayna Coakley (Grafton, Mass.) gave the visiting Colonels (2-9) an early 1-0 lead just 3:26 into the match by converting a feed from Jensen, whose unassisted marker in the 26th minute extended that margin to 2-0. Senior Vanessa DiDomenico (Wrentham, Mass.) sliced the host Buccaneers’ (1-8) deficit in half just 1:54 later when she converted a pass from sophomore Jaclyn Labrecque (Sutton, Mass.) for her fifth tally of the season, but Curry regained a two-goal edge in the 31st minute on sophomore Brittney McLaughlin’s (Wilmington, Mass.) breakaway goal off Jensen’s second feed of the night. Junior Kim Courcy (Warwick, R.I.) again cut Massachusetts Maritime’s deficit back to one with 3:46 remaining in the half with her second marker of the season, and Jensen converted a penalty kick after a foul in the box with 54 seconds to play before intermission for what proved to be the final score of the evening.
Sophomore Hayley Lorge (Beverly, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for with a seven-save effort, while senior Emily Welsh (Shelton, Conn.) made 14 stops in net in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Colonels outshot the Buccaneers by a 25-11 margin for the contest, including an 18-6 first half edge.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Fitchburg State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference match on Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 6:00 p.m., while Curry hosts Nichols in a Commonwealth Coast Conference outing on Saturday afternoon in Milton, Mass. that begins at 1:30 p.m.
