FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 3, WORCESTER STATE 2

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Thomas McCarthy’s (Tybee Island, Ga.) goal in the 63rd minute proved to be the game-winner and lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 3-2 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Worcester State Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The host Buccaneers (2-3, 1-0 MASCAC) overcame an early 1-0 deficit when sophomore Michael Rouette (Three Rivers, Mass.) converted a direct kick in the 21st minute to even matters at the break, and sophomore Kevin O’Leary (Norton, Mass.) gave Massachusetts Maritime the lead for good when he headed in another Rouette direct kick for his first career tally in the 60th minute.  McCarthy extended that margin to 3-1 less than three minutes later when he forced a turnover and scored on a breakaway for his team-leading fourth goal of the season, and that marker proved large after freshman Bryan Brasil (Williamsburg, Mass.) sliced the visiting Lancers’ (1-4-1, 0-1 MASCAC) deficit in half with his second goal of the match in the 79th minute off a turnover, as that would prove to be the final score of the evening.

Junior Joe Cohen (Plymouth, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for the Buccaneers with a pair of saves, while senior Tim Schmidt (Southwick, Mass.) made 10 stops in the setback for the Lancers, who opened the scoring in the 19th minute of action when Brasil scored on a breakaway on a feed from junior Tyler Church (Florence, Mass.).  Massachusetts Maritime outshot Worcester State by a 17-9 margin overall (13-4 on goal), as the Lancers held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Paxton, Mass. on Wednesday evening to take on Anna Maria in a non-league match that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Worcester State will be idle until next Saturday, September 26th when the Lancers travel to Framingham, Mass. for a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference clash with Framingham State that begins at Noon.
