FINAL: UMASS DARTMOUTH 3, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 1
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Junior Wilfred Ghanyea’s (Monrovia, Liberia) goal in the 58th minute of play proved to be the game-winner and lifted UMass Dartmouth to a 3-1 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Tuesday evening at Cressy Field.
Senior Karim Fernandes (New Bedford, Mass.) gave the host Corsairs (5-4-1) an early 1-0 advantage just 2:24 into the contest with an unassisted tally, but the visiting Buccaneers (4-5) evened matters just 4:08 after intermission when junior Thomas McCarthy (Tybee Island, Ga.) converted a feed from sophomore Michael Rouette (Three Rivers, Mass.) for his team-leading sixth marker of the season. Ghanyea then collected the go-ahead goal for UMass Dartmouth just over eight minutes later on a pass from senior Corey Morris (Freehold, N.J.), and the hosts received an insurance marker with just under six minutes to play on an own goal that came off a deflected clearing attempt.
Junior Luis Carranza (New Bedford, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for UMass Dartmouth with a five-save effort, while junior Joe Cohen (Plymouth, Mass.) made three stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Buccaneers outshot the Corsairs by a 12-10 margin and took both corner kicks on the evening.
Massachusetts Maritime heads to Fitchburg, Mass. on Saturday morning to take on Fitchburg State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference match beginning at 10:00 a.m., while UMass Dartmouth hosts Southern Maine in a Little East Conference clash on Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field that begins at 1:00 p.m.
