BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Junior Richie Harvey’s (Standish, Maine) goal with 3:38 remaining capped a furious comeback in the final four-plus minutes of play and lifted Wentworth to a 3-2 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.
The visiting Leopards (2-1-2) netted two goals in a 56 second span with under five minutes remaining to post the triumph, as the host Buccaneers (0-4) had taken a 1-0 lead just 12:30 into the contest on junior Derek Young’s (Falmouth, Mass.) first tally of the season. Wentworth evened matters in the 76th minute of play when freshman Nick Cotter (Sandwich, Mass.) converted a feed from senior John Geleski (Wayne, N.J.) for his third goal of the year, but Massachusetts Maritime regained the advantage with 7:32 remaining on junior Tim McDonough’s (Framingham, Mass.) first marker of the fall that was set up on a pass from freshman Rob Robbs (Braintree, Mass.). The Leopards evened matters again with 4:34 to play, as senior Josh Deschene (Webster, Mass.) converted a penalty kick after a foul in the box (his second tally of the season) to set up Harvey’s heroics, as his shot from the left side on a Cotter feed proved to be the game-winner.
Junior John Longo (Needham, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Wentworth with a four-save effort, while sophomore Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) made six stops in net in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Leopards outshot the Buccaneers by a 12-11 margin for the match.
Massachusetts Maritime opens Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon by heading to Framingham, Mass. to take on Framingham State in a league match that begins at Noon, while Wentworth hosts the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match on Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field in Boston that begins at 3:00 p.m.
