WORCESTER, Mass. --  Junior Adam Rabesa’s (Falmouth, Mass.) goal in the 66th minute of play proved to be the game-winner and lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 2-1 non-league college men’s soccer victory over WPI Wednesday evening at Alumni Field.

The visiting Buccaneers (2-10) overcame an early 1-0 deficit to even matters in the 40th minute of play on junior Adam Vieira’s (New Bedford, Mass.) direct kick conversion (his first tally of the season) from 30 yards out after senior Kyle Powers (Hamilton, N.J.) had given the host Engineers (8-5) the lead just 7:45 into the contest on a feed from sophomore Chris Ciampa (Danvers, Mass.).  Rabesa forced a turnover in the attack zone and blasted a shot from 25 yards out for his first goal of the fall that proved to be the difference for Massachusetts Maritime, and sophomore Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) made that stand up in goal for the winners by making eight saves, including a stop with just over three minutes remaining to deny the equalizer.

Sophomore Jeff Wong (Millington, N.J.) made seven saves in net in the setback for WPI, as the Engineers outshot the Buccaneers by a 17-15 margin for the match while holding a 6-2 edge in corners.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Bridgewater State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference match on Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 6:00 p.m., while WPI hosts Springfield in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field beginning at 1:30 p.m.
