SALEM, Mass. --  Junior Lamin Sawo’s (Saugus, Mass.) goal with 2:54 remaining lifted Salem State to a 1-0 victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer finale for both teams Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Sawo converted a rebound of senior Rafael Santos’s (East Boston, Mass.) shot on the game-winning tally for the host Vikings (11-6, 5-2 MASCAC), who clinched the second seed in the upcoming conference championships with the triumph.  The visiting Buccaneers, who close out their season at 2-12-1 and 1-5-1 in MASCAC play, outshot Salem State by an 13-11 margin overall and an 8-2 edge over the 45 minutes of play, as Massachusetts Maritime freshman Stuart Kinsman (Granville, Mass.) nearly evened matters with eight seconds remaining before his shot fell wide in a contest played in rain-soaked conditions.

Junior Scott Hall (Waltham, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for the Vikings with an eight-save effort, while sophomore Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) made three saves in net in the setback for the Buccaneers.

Salem State will face either Worcester State, Bridgewater State or Westfield State in semi-final round play of the 2011 MASCAC Championships next week.
