NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Sophomore Victor Ferreira’s (St. Michael, Portugal) goal in the 57th minute of play lifted UMass Dartmouth to a 2-1 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Thursday evening at Cressy Field.

Freshman Nick Gontijo (Hudson, Mass.) gave the host Corsairs (8-4-1) a 1-0 advantage just 48 seconds into the contest when he converted a feed from fellow freshman Elton Borges (Praia, Cape Verde), but the visiting Buccaneers (1-9) evened matters just 9:53 after intermission when junior Derek Young (Falmouth, Mass.) took a pass from fellow junior Tim McDonough (Framingham, Mass.) for his second marker of the season.  Ferreira netted what proved to be the game-winning tally for UMass Dartmouth just 1:17 after Young’s tying goal, as he converted a feed from freshman Jacinto Centeio (Boston, Mass.) on the deciding score.

Freshman Tim Walsh (Stow, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for the Corsairs with a five-save effort, while sophomore Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) also made five stops in net in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as UMass Dartmouth outshot the Buccaneers by a 12-10 margin for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Worcester State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference match on Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at Noon, while UMass Dartmouth hosts Southern Maine in a Little East Conference outing on Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field that begins at 2:00 p.m.
