Sullo & McNeil go Yard in Buccaneer Loss to Worcester

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Monday afternoon, the Buccaneers hosted Worcester State in the final game of the three-game series between the teams. On Saturday, the team's split the first two games of the series, on Monday, the Lancers won the series with a nail-biting, 6-5, win over the Bucs.

 

How It Happened

Maritime started of the game with a bang with a three-run home run off the bat of shortstop Dylan Sullo (Acushnet, Mass) in the bottom of the first inning. His second of the season and second in as many games.

Worcester struck back in the top of the second inning, scoring one run on a wild pitch, and a second run on a Cooper Bigelow (Leominster, Mass) to bring the score to 3-2 after one and a half innings.

The Bucs scored a fourth run in the bottom of the third when Nick Haley (Hanson, Mass) singled to score Paul Sances (Middleboro, Mass) from second.

Neither team scored a run in the fourth or fifth innings but, in the sixth, the Lancers erased the deficit and took a 6-4 lead scoring four runs in the top of the inning. They crossed one of the four runs on a bases loaded walk of Seth Leslie (Phillipston, Mass) and another on a squeeze bunt by catcher Michael Chaves, Jr. (Hudson, Mass), scoring Kevin Larkin (Rocky Hill, Conn). Down 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth, Angus McNeil (Middleton. Mass) cut the two-run deficit in half with a solo home run over the right centerfield fence.

Over the final three innings, both teams threatened multiple times with a number of runners in scoring positions, but, at the end of it all, the Lancers took the 6-5 victory.

At The Plate

Maritime batted .250 in the game, 8-for-32 at the plate.

Haley had three of the Buccaneer hits, Sullo had two, including his home run, which drove in three runs.

McNeil also had a multi-hit game for the Bucs, drove in a run and walked twice.

The Buccaneers drew seven walks, struck out just three times and left eight men on base.

Worcester went 10-for-34 at the plate. Third baseman Sam Allen (Springfield, Mass), designated hitter Jake Breton (Wilbraham, Mass), and Bigelow each had multi-hit games.

All of Worcester's 10 hits were singles. Five different players drove in runs and six different players scored for the Lancers in the game.

Worcester drew 14 walks, struck out five times and left 18 runners on base in the game.
