Buccaneers Dropped Season Opener in First Ever Meeting with Wilkes Colonels

FORT PIERCE, Fla – After spending the first week of their Spring Training trip to Florida, practicing and preparing for their 2019 season, the Buccaneers opened their 2019 season against Wilkes University. This was the first ever meeting between the two programs and they didn't disappoint, providing an exciting, 16-run game that ended 9-7 in favor of the Colonels.

How It Happened

The Colonels wasted no time opening the scoring, getting on the board in the top of the first inning. The Buccaneers settled in defensively and in the bottom of the 3rd inning, they tied the game at one apiece when sophomore Dylan Sullo (Acushnet, Mass) grounded in to a fielder's choice, scoring JohnPaul Kelley (Quincy, Mass) from third.

Wilkes took the lead again in the top of the fourth inning, scoring four times, opening up a 5-1 advantage. Maritime answered again, this time immediately, in the bottom of the fourth, plating two runs and then two more in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game up again at five after five innings

In the top of the sixth, the Colonels scored one on a bunt single to take a 6-5 lead. Though the Bucs scored two more times on a triple by senior captain Robert Dembitzki (North Dartmouth, Mass) that scored two in the bottom of the eighth, which made the score 8-7 at the time, the Colonels would never relinquish the lead. They added a run in the 9th for good measure take the game, 9-7.
