Sullo Named As MASCAC Baseball Player & Rookie Of The Year, Five Buccaneers Earn All-Conference Accolades

Massachusetts Maritime freshman catcher/outfielder Logan Sullo was named on Wednesday morning as both the 2015 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Rookie of the Year in a vote of the league’s coaches, and he is one of five Buccaneers who earned MASCAC all-conference honors this season.

A native of Acushnet, Mass. and a graduate of Bishop Stang High School, Sullo batted .492 (31-63) in 20 regular season contests, with over half of his hits going for extra bases.  He has rapped out eight doubles, six triples and a pair of homers while driving in 18 runs to date, posting a whopping .905 slugging percentage and a .589 on-base percentage that includes nine walks and six hit-by-pitches as part of 79 total plate appearances.  Logan was named as the league’s Player of the Week on a pair of occasions this spring while also earning MASCAC Rookie of the Week accolades four times, and he was also named as the ECAC Division III New England Rookie of the Week twice while also claiming a spot on the d3Baseball.com Team of the Week on April 6th.

Sullo becomes the first player in school history to earn MASCAC Player of the Year honors and the third Buccaneer to claim the league’s Rookie of the Year award, as he joins Bob Kent (2006) and Nick Levitre (2008) in that exclusive club.

Joining Sullo on the first team all-MASCAC squad are senior teammates Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) and Greg Downs (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield), as Rosano earned his third straight all-league citation at shortstop after batting .297 with 27 hits that included seven doubles, a triple and a team-leading 14 stolen bases during regular season play.  Downs was tabbed as the first team all-MASCAC first baseman after batting .295 in 26 regular season contests, as he tied Sullo for the team lead in doubles with eight while adding a triple, two homers and 15 RBI.  Downs also recorded 194 putouts at the first base bag to lead Massachusetts Maritime in that category.

Juniors Kyle Kennedy (Woodbury, Conn./Nonnewaug) and Kevin Kwedor (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) round out the Buccaneer all-conference quintet after earning second team all-MASCAC accolades on the mound.  Kennedy claimed his second straight all-conference nod after appearing in 13 games and recording a 3-1 mark with a 1.91 ERA (fourth best in the league) and four saves.  He has struck out 26 in 33 innings pitched while holding opponents to a .215 batting average, and he earned victories in both ends of last week’s doubleheader sweep of Framingham State.

Kwedor, who last year became the 25th pitcher in NCAA Division III history to toss a perfect game in a 4-0 triumph over MCLA, is tied for the MASCAC lead in overall victories with a 6-2 regular season mark, as he is averaging over a strikeout per inning after fanning 42 in 41 1/3 innings while posting a 2.81 ERA.  Three of Kwedor’s victories have come in conference play, and he has posted a 2.13 league ERA with 28 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings pitched.

Massachusetts Maritime captured its first MASCAC regular season title in 33 years this spring with a 10-4 conference mark, as Head Coach Bob Corradi’s Buccaneers have earned the top seed in the upcoming league tournament that begins on Friday and will be played throughout the weekend at Commodore Hendy Field.  Massachusetts Maritime, which stands at 17-10 overall on the season, will host either fourth-seeded Framingham State or fifth-seeded Westfield State in a second round MASCAC tournament match-up on Friday afternoon beginning at 3:00 p.m. EDT.
