Sullo Named As MASCAC Baseball Player, Rookie Of The Week

Massachusetts Maritime freshman outfielder Logan Sullo was named as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Rookie of the Week on Monday afternoon for his efforts in four Buccaneer contests played last week.  Additionally, freshman Jessica Gratzer was named earlier today as the MASCAC Women’s Outdoor Field Co-Rookie of the Week for her efforts in Massachusetts Maritime’s competition at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic last Saturday afternoon.

Sullo, a native of Dartmouth, Mass. and a graduate of Bishop Stang High School, batted .571 (8-14) with three doubles, a triple, a two-run homer and six RBI on the week for the Buccaneers, as he came up a single shy of hitting for the cycle with a two-bagger, three-bagger and his first collegiate homer while driving in four runs in Saturday’s 5-2 victory at Worcester State.  Sullo, who copped MASCAC Rookie of the Week accolades for the second straight week, also plated the go-ahead runs with a two-run single in Friday’s 7-4 rain-soaked triumph over Fitchburg State at Commodore Hendy Field, and he added his second four-hit game in a week’s time while scoring three runs in a 10-4 win at Johnson & Wales last Tuesday.  Sullo posted a 1.143 slugging percentage and a .647 on-base percentage for the week, as Head Coach Bob Corradi’s squad won three of four contests and improved to 7-5 overall (2-1 in league play) on the season.

Gratzer, a native of Pembroke, Mass. and a graduate of Pembroke High School, set a school record with a fourth place finish in the shot put for Head Coach Cathy Lohse’s Buccaneers, posting a mark of 10.53 meters (34 feet, 6 ¾ inches).  Gratzer helped lead Massachusetts Maritime to a solid 12th place team finish in the event among 17 schools competing.

The Buccaneer baseball team returns to action on Wednesday afternoon by hosting Newbury in a non-league outing at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:30 p.m. EDT, while the Buccaneer outdoor track & field squad travels to New London, Conn. on Saturday morning to compete at the Connecticut College Silfen Invitational that begins at 10:00 a.m. EDT.
