Weir, Rosano Named As 2014-15 Massachusetts Maritime Alumni Athletes Of The Year

Buzzards Bay, Mass. --  Volleyball and softball standout Meghan Weir, along with three-time baseball all-conference performer and football record-setter Bobby Rosano, were named as the 2014-15 Massachusetts Maritime Alumni Athletes of the Year on Wednesday evening as the Buccaneer Class of 2015 was honored at the Department of Athletics’ Senior Student-Athlete Awards Banquet at the Bay State Conference Center on campus.

 

Weir, a native of North Andover, Mass. and a graduate of North Andover High School, served as a two-year softball captain and ranked among the team leaders in several categories on the diamond and on the volleyball court during her career, including kills, digs, attack percentage, hits, RBI and on-base percentage.  A leader in the Academy’s Regiments of Cadets, Weir helped the Buccaneers to their highest single-season win totals in both sports in over a decade during her tenure.

 

Rosano, a native of North Reading, Mass. and a graduate of North Reading High School, is a three-time all-Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference performer on the baseball diamond and added Division III all-New England accolades during his sophomore campaign two years ago.  He ranks in the top 10 in several career categories in the baseball record books, and this spring he helped the Buccaneers capture their first MASCAC title in 33 years and earn a berth in this weekend’s ECAC New England semifinals.  Rosano also shined on the gridiron during his career, ranking among the team’s reception leaders while setting an NCAA Division III record for most kickoff returns during his junior campaign of 2013.

 

Football standout Victor Andrade (Yarmouth Port, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) was named as the recipient of the Academic Dean’s Award, which honors senior student-athletes who have persevered in athletics as well as in academics, combining outstanding academic achievement with athletic accomplishments.  An International Maritime Business major at the Academy, Andrade has achieved a 3.226 cumulative grade point average in the classroom while earning all-MASCAC accolades on the gridiron.

 

Volleyball team captain Lauren O’Shaughnessy (Yarmouth Port, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) received the Foundation Award, which is presented to a female student-athlete who best exemplifies the true spirit and philosophy of Division III athletics, while three-time men’s lacrosse captain Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) was the recipient of the Trustees Award, which is presented to a male senior student-athlete who best exemplifies the spirit and philosophy of Division III athletics.

 

ECAC Merit Medals, which recognize senior student-athletes who are members of a varsity team governed by ECAC and NCAA rules of eligibility and are bestowed on athletes who have combined athletic achievement with service to the institution, were presented to men’s soccer all-conference performer Rob Robbs (Braintree, Mass./Braintree), women’s crew standout Jillian Stronk (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire), football captain Zach Ryan (Danvers, Mass./Danvers), sailing standout Priscilla Stoll (Pocasset, Mass./Bourne), outdoor track & field all-New England performer Zach Poh (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham), record-setting football and outdoor track & field performer E.J. Bennett (East Wareham, Mass./Wareham) and women’s lacrosse and cross country captain Jenelle Piche (Coventry, R.I./Coventry). 

 

Six individuals were presented with the Robert E. Corradi Senior Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Award, which is named for the Academy’s longtime Director of Athletics and Head Baseball Coach and recognizes members of the senior class who have provided valuable contributions and service to the Buccaneer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee during their matriculation at the Academy.  This year’s recipients were outgoing SAAC President Freudenberg, baseball captain Tyler Smith (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham), men’s cross country captain Alexander Barnas (Easton, Pa./Easton Area), football standout Richard Ford (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Classical), men’s soccer captain Stuart Kinsman (Granville, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) and volleyball & women’s lacrosse captain Deb Langley (Abington, Mass./South Shore Voke).

 

Athletic Director’s Academic Achievement Awards were presented to 14 members of the senior class for their outstanding accomplishments in the classroom during their career, as the honor is awarded to student-athletes who have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 in their chosen major.  Those student-athletes honored were Marine Engineering major Stronk, Marine Transportation majors Matthew Ferlotti (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) and Andrew Morgan (Jupiter, Fla./Suncoast) of the sailing team along with women’s cross country standout Elise LaBonte (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth); Marine Safety & Environmental Protection majors Barnas and Piche; Facilities Engineering majors Poh, Ryan, Smith and baseball captain Zac Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass./Cardinal Spellman), International Maritime Business majors Andrade and baseball captain T.J. Notarangelo (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) as well as Emergency Management majors Cody Carneiro (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip) of outdoor track & field and football captain John Trudel (Niantic, Conn./Ledyard).

 

Massachusetts Maritime’s Director of Health Services Dr. Jeff Cukor and longtime Academy chaplain Father Jim Houston were co-recipients of the ECAC Appreciation Award, which recognizes institutional staff members, past and present, for their efforts in advancing the services and programs of the ECAC and their member institutions.  Additionally, a total of 58 members of the Academy’s Class of 2015 were honored by Buccaneer Director of Athletics Bob Corradi, their respective head coaches and the Team IMPACT honorary members of Massachusetts Maritime’s men’s lacrosse, baseball, football and men’s soccer teams: 14-year-old Teddy McGowan of Forestdale, Mass., 13-year-old Tyler Smith of Falmouth, Mass., 13-year-old Michael Hebert of Marshfield, Mass. and eight-year-old Thomas Schmid of Marshfield, Mass., with their senior class gifts.
