GAME #1 FINAL:          MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 5, MCLA 3

GAME #2 FINAL:          MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 3, MCLA 1

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. --  Junior Everett Walsh (Marstons Mills, Mass.) drove in all three runs to back a solid six inning effort on the mound from sophomore Daniel Avery (Milford, Mass.) as Massachusetts Maritime completed a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from MCLA with a 3-1 nightcap triumph Saturday afternoon at Joe Zavattaro Field.  In the opener, junior Kevin Kwedor (Marshfield, Mass.) scattered six hits and struck out six in recording his fifth win of the spring with a 5-3 Buccaneer triumph.

The visiting Buccaneers (11-9, 6-4 MASCAC) overcame a 1-0 second inning deficit in the opener to even matters on an RBI double by sophomore Terrence Mudie (Barnstable, Mass.), but the host Trailblazers (9-11, 2-6 MASCAC) regained a one-run edge in the bottom of the frame on senior Alon Willing’s (Altamont, N.Y.) run-scoring single.  Massachusetts Maritime took the lead for good in the third on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Jonah Olsen (Falmouth, Mass.) and a fielder’s choice by sophomore Jake Petruzzelli (Abington, Mass.), and the visitors plated a pair of insurance tallies in the fifth on freshman Connor Kennedy’s (West Barnstable, Mass.) two-run single.  MCLA closed to within two in the seventh on an RBI groundout by senior Rory Slattery (Pittsfield, Mass.), but the hosts left the tying run at the plate to account for the final score.

Senior Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.) and freshman William Keane (Braintree, Mass.) also recorded singles as part of a six-hit opening game attack for Massachusetts Maritime, as Kwedor improved to 5-2 on the season.  Junior Kyle Kennedy (Woodbury, Conn.) came on to record the final six outs of the contest for the Buccaneers, as he earned his third save of the season.  Senior Chase Preite (North Adams, Mass.) rapped out three of MCLA’s eight hits in the opening game setback, as Slattery drove in a pair of runs with two hits as well for the Trailblazers.  Junior Robert Jutras (Readsboro, Vt.) allowed four earned runs over the first six innings for the hosts to fall to 1-4 on the season.

Walsh broke open a scoreless nightcap in the top of the fifth with a two-run single that gave Massachusetts Maritime the only runs they it would need, as after MCLA sliced its deficit in half on Preite’s RBI single in the sixth, freshman Logan Sullo (Dartmouth, Mass.) rapped out a one-out double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Walsh’s sacrifice fly in the seventh to account for the final score.  Sullo collected two of the Buccaneers’ six second game hits, as Rosano, Mudie and Petruzzelli also singled in support of Avery, who scattered six hits and struck out three to record his first win of the season.  Senior Zac Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) worked around a walk to get the final three outs, as he fanned one in earning his fifth save of the spring.  Preite and senior Mike Sullivan (Wareham, Mass.) each had two of MCLA’s six hits in the nightcap, as freshman Ryan Grande (Pittsfield, Mass.) allowed six hits and struck out five over five innings to fall to 1-3 on the mound for the Trailblazers.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Framingham State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at Noon, while MCLA heads to Bridgewater, Mass. on Monday afternoon to square off with Bridgewater State in a MASCAC twinbill that begins at 1:00 p.m.
