Kennedy Named To 2015 Capital One Division III Baseball Academic All-District Team, Eligible For National Honors Early Next Month

Buzzards Bay, Mass. --  Massachusetts Maritime junior pitcher Kyle Kennedy has been named to the 2015 Capital One Division III Baseball Academic All-District® team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America for his performance both on the diamond and in the classroom, as he will now be eligible for selection to the national Capital One Division III Academic All-America® squad that will be announced in early June.

A native of Woodbury, Conn. and a graduate of Nonnewaug High School, Kennedy has posted a 3.60 cumulative grade point average as a Facilities Engineering major at the Academy, as he becomes the sixth Buccaneer student-athlete to earn Academic All-District® accolades since 2009.  Kyle is bidding to become Massachusetts Maritime’s fourth Academic All-America® selection, as he would join two-time football honoree Brandon Rodrigues ’14 (2012 & 2013), football standout John Moriarty ‘14 (2013) and baseball Hall of Famer John Hendy, who was the Academy’s first Academic All-America® during his senior season of 1982.

Kennedy earned second-team all-Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference honors for a second straight season this spring, as he has posted a 3-1 mark with four saves and a 1.80 earned run average in 14 appearances to date.  Kyle helped lead Head Coach Bob Corradi’s Buccaneers to a share of their first MASCAC championship in 33 years, as he has struck out 31 batters in 40 innings of work and limited opponents to a .219 batting average while ranking fourth in the league in ERA and fifth in saves.  Kennedy was tabbed as the MASCAC Co-Pitcher of the Week on April 13th after tossing 12 2/3 shutout innings, and he posted a 16 2/3 scoreless inning streak as both a starter and reliever earlier this season.

Kennedy has earned spots on both the Massachusetts Maritime Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and the MASCAC Spring All-Academic Team in each of his three years of matriculation at the Academy, and the Dean’s List student claimed all-MASCAC accolades in 2014 after posting a perfect 5-0 slate with a 2.29 earned run average.

Corradi’s crew has earned a berth in the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championships, as Massachusetts Maritime will take a 17-12 overall mark into Saturday’s semifinal clash at Salve Regina beginning at 11:00 a.m. EDT.

Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America® teams program since 2011.  The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America® programs are being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2014-15 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.  Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America® honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
