Maritime Posts Good Numbers in Season Finale Loss to Falcons

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- In a match rescheduled from last WEdnesday due to the power outages on the Academy campus, the Buccaneers took on Fisher College in the team's final game of 2021. Though the Bucs posted some of their highest numbers and hitting percentage of the season, they were unable to hold off the Falcons losing in straight sets 3-0.

The Basics

Final: Fisher 3, Maritime 0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-22)

Records: Fisher 15-9

           Maritime 1-21 (0-7 MASCAC)

For The Bucs

  • Ameena Freeman (Columbus, OH) had a career night tallying 10 kills, a career-high, and matched her career-high in digs with 23. She also added two assists and two service aces to her stat line.
  • Senior Tegan Murray (Newbury, MA) had two kills, 5 digs, a solo block and a block assist in her final match as a Buccaneer.
  • Alex Smith (Shippensburg, PA) tallied four kills offensively with Marlo Sim (Groton, CT) having two kills, two assists, and nine digs defensively.
  • The Buccaneer posted a .078 hitting percentage on the evening, led by Freeman at .308 followed by Smith at .231.

For The Falcons

  • Macy Barnes led the match with 19 kills. Aya Al-Juraishi tallied 10 of her own. Nathalie Ortiz added eight for the Falcons.
  • Paola Velazquez led the match with 36 assists for Fisher.
  • Lia Aime had a match-high 24 digs with Ortiz and Edsyl Irrizary each had 16 digs. 

How It Happened

The Falcons controlled most of the first set jumping out to an early 9-3 advantage. Maritime did put together a 4-1 run in the middle of the game to bring the score back to within four points at 14-10. From there, Fisher only allowed Maritime to score two more points, scoring 11 of their own, including a 9-0 run to close out the set, winning 25-12.

Set two started in favor of the Bucs who went up 2-0. They then fell behind 7-2 after a 7-0 run by the Falcons but pulled back within one on another 4-1 run. A hard hitting Falcons squad went on to take a 15-7 lead midway through the game. The Buccaneer hung in the game only being outscored 10-7 down the stretch. Those 10 points were good enough for Fisher to take the second game 25-14. 

Maritime did not make the third set easy for the Falcons. Fisher started with a 3-0 lead which was followed by a string of Maritime points with Fisher mixing in a few of their own. Maritime took a lead at 9-8 then again at 14-13. With the score 14-13, Maritime extended their small lead to two points, 16-14. Fisher grabbed back the momentum scoring six points in a row to retake the lead and go up four, 20-16. The Bucs battled, scoring points and forcing mistakes by the Falcons to get back within two points, 24-22. Barnes then finished off the game, 25-22, and the Match, 3-0, for Fisher with her 19th kill of the night.
