BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Thursday evening, the Buccaneer volleyball team hosted Gordon College in a non-conference match in the Clean Harbors Center.

The Basics

Final: Gordon 3, Maritime 0

For The Bucs

  • Ameena Freeman (Columbus, OH) and Marlo Sim (Groton, CT) led the Bucs with two kills each.
  • Audrey Manning (Hanover, MA) had two assists in the match.
  • Defensively, Freeman amassed seven digs while Sim compiled six. Isabelle Miazga (Rocky Hill, CT) had five digs in the loss.
  • Captains Bianca Andronic (Somerset, MA) and Tegan Murray (Newburyport, MA) combined for the only block of the evening.
  • The Bucs had eight kills total in the match with a -.175 hitting percentage.

For The Fighting Scots

  • Jordan Shaduk had a match-high 11 kills for Gordon. Valerie Nilan added nine kills with Joey Keltner having seven of her own.
  • Alex Quinones led the Scots in assists with 14, Olivia Fleming had eight and Kate Howe added seven assists.
  • Gordon had nine service aces in the match, four players had two apiece.
  • Hayley Robinson led the match with 14 digs, Keltner tallied 12 on the defensive end.
  • Nilan had two solo blocks and three block assists for the guests.
  • The Fighting Scots totaled 38 kills and a .427 hitting percentage in the win.

How It Happened

Gordon came out swinging early and the Bucs were prepared for it at the start of the first set. The teams traded points to begin the match with the Bucs hanging within a point until the 5-4 mark of the first. The Scots proceeded to go on a 5-0 run to run their lead out to 10-5. Gordon continued to go on two and three-point bursts eventually running out to a 20-9 lead. The Bucs got two more points in a 2-2 trade of points which was followed by a Scots run to take the first set 25-11.

Set two started off with a 2-0 lead for the Bucs on kills by Sim and Freeman. Gordon gained momentum after a Maritime service error and scored 11 of the next 12 points to take an 11-3 lead. Maritime scored two points in a row again to make it 11-5 before a 10-0 run by Gordon to take a 21-5 advantage. The hitting of Gordon in the second set was tremendous and they scored four of the final six points of the set to take the 25-7 win of set two.

Joey Keltner served 12 times in a row to being set three for Gordon as the guests jumped out to a 12-0 lead. Maritime erased the shutout on a Gordon service error and ball handling error to make it 12-2. Gordon picked up the momentum once again scoring 12 of 13 to make the score 24-4. With match point looming, the Bucs went on a five-point run and small comeback to make it 24-9. From that score, Nilan was able to end the game with a kill. Gordon won set three 25-9, and the match 3-0.
