Bucs Honor Tegan Murray; Fall to Owls on Senior Day

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- After having to postpone their final conference game of the season on Saturday, the Buccaneers hosted the Westfield State Owls at the Clean Harbors Center on Sunday afternoon. Prior to the match, the Buccaneers honored senior Tegan Murray (Newbury, MA) on Senior Day. At the end of the day, Westfield State, the number two seed in the MASCAC, took down the Bucs in straight sets, 3-0. 

The Basics

Final: Westfield 3, Maritime 0 (25-3, 25-9, 25-11)

Records: Westfield 7-20 (6-1 MASCAC)

           Maritime 1-20 (0-7 MASCAC)

For The Bucs

  • Senior captain Tegan Murray (Newbury, MA) tied for the match-high in blocks with one. She added two kills, two service aces and a dig in the match.
  • Ameena Freeman (Columbus, OH) and Izabella Mackintosh (Plymouth, MA) led the Bucs with three kills each.
  • Audrey Manning had seven assists for Maritime. Kolby Barbieri (Haverhill, MA) added four. 
  • Marlo Sim (Groton, CT) had a mtch-high 16 digs defensively. Freeman had 12 of her own. 

For The Owls

  • Bridgette McAndrews led the match with 10 kills. Ashley Crowley and Shawna Crowley had eight and sevens kills respectively. 
  • Julia Dangel-Garcia produced a match-high 27 assists and three service aces. 
  • Jess Haradon led the Owls with 13 digs defensively. Ashley Crowley had 11 digs. 
  • Dangel -Garcia picked up a solo block. Julia Bartiet and Ashley Crowley each had two block assists. McAndrews and Sarah Bingham each had one block assist.

How It Happened

Maritime had a tough time getting anything going in the first set. Westfield took a 3-0 lead to start the match. While the Bucs brought it back to 3-1, the Owls quickly went up 10-1 followed by a 6-0 run after hte Buccaneers scored their second point. At 16-2, Maritime scored their third point. Westfield, with Bingham serving, went on a 9-0 run to finish off the first set, 25-3.

In set two, Westfield had a similar start, going on a 10-3 run to open the game. The Owls continued to score with the Bucs adding points intermittently throughout. The Bucs got to nine points but not before Westfield got to 22. The guests scored the final three points of the game to take a 2-0 lead in the match. 

In set three, The Buccaneers came out firing, grabbing their most significant lead of the match early with a 7-3 advantage to being the game. Westfield brough it back to an 8-8 game and then went on to take a 13-10 lead midway through. The Bucs couldn't get back within reach of the Owls the rest of the game but did go down swigning, 25-11, in game three. With their win, Westfield secured the two seed in the MASCAC playoff tournament next week.
