Bucs Lose to Pioneers in Straight Sets on the Road

NORTHAMPTON, Mass – The Buccaneers took to the road on Tuesday evening to take on the Smith College Pioneers in Northampton, Ma in an early season non-conference match with the NEWMAC squad. The 3-1 Pioneers sank the Buccaneers in straight sets to take the match 3-0.

 

The Basics

Final: Pioneers 3, Buccaneers 0 (28-8, 25-11, 25-4)

Records: Smith 4-1

               Maritime 0-3

 

For The Bucs

  • Sophomore Ameena Freeman (Columbus, Oh) led the offensive attack for Maritime with four kills and a .071 hitting percentage. Tegan Murray (Newburyport, Ma) added three kills.
  • Senior Captain Bianca Andronic (Somerset, Ma) had three assists in the match. Junior Isabelle Miazga (Rocky Hill, Ct) and freshman Audrey Manning (Hanover, Ma) each added an assist.
  • Miazga picked up a team-high eight digs. Bianca Andronic followed closely with six. Freeman and Marlo Sim (Groton, Ct) each had four digs in the match.
  • Junior Alexa Smith (Shippensburg, Pa) freshman Katerina Galvan (Corwall, N.Y.) combined for the lone block for the Bucs.

 

For The Pioneers

  • Olivia Smith picked up a match-high eight kills. The Pioneer offense spread the points around with two players with five kills, two others with three and multiple others with two.
  • Nathalie Pak recorded 14 assists in the win.
  • Gabby Beckman recorded six service aces, Katie Abbruzzese had four of her own.
  • Ari Cross dug out 13 balls defensively for Smith to lead the match.

 

How It Happened

Maritime took a very early lead in the match in set one with a 2-0 lead to open the first set. A very good Smith team took over the set and the match after that going on a 25-4 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Pioneers put up a .304 hitting percentage in the first set while the Bucs posted their best hitting percentage at -.077 with four kills.

In set two, the Bucs put up a fight holding strong against the Pioneers early. Though both teams trade points early, Smith went on a second run in the second set eventually running out to a 25-11 win, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Pioneers took their momentum from the first two sets and ran with it, winning the set 25-4, posting a .500 hitting percentage to take the game and the match, 3-0.

 

What's Next?

The Buccaneers will travel to Curry College on Saturday to take on the Colonels for the second time this season and will face off against Boston based NAIA school Fisher College. The Bucs take on Fisher at 1pm and Curry at 3pm. All the action and stats from those games will be available at mmabucs.com
