Bucs Competitive in Conference Loss to Worcester

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Maritime took on Worcester in their fifth conference match of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Buccaneers were competitive against a strong Lancers team but couldn't hold them off a 3-0 loss.

The Basics

Final: Worcester 3, Maritime 0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-14)

Records: Worcester 7-12 (5-0 MASCAC)

For The Bucs

  • Tegan Murray (Newbury, MA) and Alex Smith (Shippensburg, PA) led the Bucs with two kills each. 
  • Kolby Barbieri (Haverhill, MA) and Audrey Manning (Hanover, MA) each had two assists.
  • Murray and Manning recordd the only service aces for Maritime.
  • Defensively, Ameena Freeman (Columbus, OH) led the team with 11 digs. Manning, Isabelle Miazga (Rocky Hill, CT) and Alaina Liddell (Weymouth, MA) each had six digs. Smith and Marlo Sim (Groton, CT) tallied five apiece.

For The Lancers

  • Maeve CadoganNatalie Gillis, and Gabby Alberghini led the match with six kills each. Leelle Taylor and Angela Colonis had five each.
  • Colonis led the match in assists with 13. Sarah Ward added 10 assists.
  • Ward led the match in service aces with four. Denice Hoxha added three.
  • Camryn Burgio led the match defensively with 14 digs. Colonis added 10. 
  • Cadogan, Alberghini, and Klea Xhemollari each had a block for the Lancers.

How It Happened

Maritime fell behind early in game one, going down 9-3 due to a handful of attack errors and Lancers service aces. Over the middle portion of the first set the Bucs kept pace with Worcester staying within five points. With the score 15-10, Worcester gained momentum, scoring five in a row and going on a 9-2 run. The Bucs scored a point to make it 24-13 and couldn't hold of Worcester losing set one, 25-13.

Set two stayed close 3/4 of the way through the game with MAritime sticking within four of a strong Worcester team up until the score went to 15-11. The Lancers proceeded to go on a 10-1 run to close out the set by the same score as set one, 25-13. 

In game three, the Bucs took a very early 2-0 lead the the Lancers matched with a 12-1 run on the back of some well places attacks and fortunate bounces that went their way. Maritime grabbed some momentum going on a 5-2 spurt to make the score 14-8. Worcester took control again and chipped away at the scoreboard with the Bucs sprinking in points intermitently. The Lancers scored five of the final seven points to take game three, 25-14, and the match, 3-0.

What's Next

Maritime will host Fitchburg State in a midweek conference match on Wednesday, October 20th at 7pm at the Clean Harbors Athletics Center. It will also be the team's annual Dig Pink game to raise awareness for Breat Cancer. There will be a bakesale during the match and an opportunity to donate to the charity of the team's choosing with all proceeds being donated.
