Bucs fall to ‘Blazers and Bantams in Saturday Tri-Match

NORTH ADAMS, Mass – Volleyball traveled to western Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon for a tri-match with MASCAC foe MCLA and NESCAC power Trinity College. Coming off of their win on Tuesday against Dean, the Bucs were beat 3-0 in both matches. 

Match One – MCLA

The Basics

Final: MCLA 3, Maritime 0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-18)

Records: MCLA 5-3 (1-1 MASCAC)

                Maritime 1-10 (0-2 MASCAC)

For The Bucs

  • Ameena Freeman (Columbus, OH) had a team-high six kills in the match. She added a match-high 16 digs defensively.
  • Captain Bianca Andronic (Somerset, MA) and Marlo Sim (Groton, CT) each had three kills. Andronic had 14 assists to lead the Bucs.
  • Freeman, Bianca and Audrey Manning (Hanover, MA) have two service aces each.
  • Isabelle Miazga (Rocky Hill, CT) had 10 digs for Maritime.
  • Izabella Mackintosh (Plymouth, MA) was strong at the net with two blocks. Kolby Barbieri (Haverhill, MA) added a block of her own. 

For The Trailblazers

  • Chloie Garber led the match with 14 kills. Reagan Scattergood and Kelly Moczulski each had eight kills.
  • Natasha Stewart had 35 assists in the match.
  • Garber has five service aces in the win
  • Garber also had a team-high 16 digs. Moczulski had 14 and Julia Graham recorded 12.
  • Scattergood had two solo blocks for the 'Blazers.

How It Happened

MCLA came out strong, posting a .562 hitting percentage in the first set. Maritime also had their highest and best hitting percentage of the match at .154. MCLA controlled the first set most of the way through. The Bucs did not score back-to-back points in the match until the end when they shrunk the MCLA lead from 12 to 10. The Trailblazers took the first set, 25-14.

In set two, Maritime took the reins to start things off, going up early, 7-2. With the score 8-3 Maritime, MCLA took control going on a 6-0 run that turned in to an 8-2 run to take a 15-10 lead. Maritime closed the gap and even took a 19-17 lead late in the set. A competitive game by both sides, the 'Blazers erased the two-point deficit and scored eight of the final 12 points in the set to take game two, 25-23.

Set three was a hard fought battle once again. MCLA took an early lead which was likely the downfall for the Bucs. MCLA led 18-10 and while the Bucs closed the gap, the lead for the hosts was too big as the Bucs fell to MCLA in the third set, 25-18, and in the match, 3-0.

With the win, MCLA improves to 1-1 in MASCAC play while the Bucs fall to 0-2.

 

Match Two – Trinity

The Basics

Final: Trinity 3, Maritime 0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-4)

For The Bucs

  • For the second time this week, Tegan Murray (Newbury, MA) led the Bucs in kills with four this time around.
  • Manning led the team in assists with three.
  • Freeman continued her defensive dominance with eight digs to lead the match. Sim added seven digs.
  • Barbieri and Mackintosh each had a solo block. Murray and Bianca Andronic had a block assist.

For The Bantams

  • Lola Craig led the Bantams and the match with nine kills.
  • Locke Luhnow and Emma Shorten led Trinity with seven assists each.
  • Hareena Johnson served up three aces in the match.
  • Craig led the Bantams in digs with seven.
  • Eva Lekovic had two blocks in the win.

How It Happened

Unfortunately for the Buccaneers, they ran into a NESCAC buzzsaw against Trinity in their second match of their MCLA tri-match on Saturday. The Bantams posted a .254 match hitting percentage and took all three games by 10 or more points. In the first set, the Bucs came out strong, scoring 14 points against their opponent. In the second and third sets, they only found 13 points against a strong, hard hitting Bantams squad.

The Bucs fell 3-0 to Trinity and fell to 1-10 on the season.

What's Next

The Bucs will host Framingham State in conference play on Wednesday, September 29th at 7pm at the Clean Harbors Center. All vaccinated fans are welcome and must wear a mask while inside at all times.
