Buccaneers Drop Both Matches of Final Tri-Match of the Season

DARTMOUTH, Mass -- Buccaneer volleyball crashed a Little East Conference meeting between Southern Maine and UMass Dartmouth on Saturday for a set of games with the Huskies and Corsairs. The Bucs were competitive but dropped both matches in straight sets, 3-0.

Match One - Southern Maine

The Basics

Final: Southern Maine 3, Maritime 0 (25-8, 25-19, 25-15)

Records: Southern Maine 6-10 (1-3 LEC)

           Maritime 1-13 (0-3 MASCAC)

For The Bucs

For The Huskies

  • Brianna Delloiacono and Kim Grant led all players with eight kills apiece. 
  • Sophie Lindsay posted a match-high 26 assists.
  • Phoebe Slovenski had six service aces in the win.
  • Sierra Castonguay had eight digs to lead USM.

How It Happened

It was a strong start for the Huskies in the first set, which led to a strong all around performance for Southern Maine. The Huskies ran out to a 16-3 advantage in the first set and didn't look back, winning the game 25-8.

Maritime battled hard in the second set keeping up with and trading points with USM until the score went to 11-10 in favor of the Huskies. A six-point run followed for the team from Maine ad they went out to a 17-10 advantage. The Bucs continued to keep up however cutting the lead back to three. Unfortunately, the six-point run earlier in the set would prove to be the difference as the Huskies took the second game 25-19.

Maritime fell behind early in the third and final game of their first match of the day with the Huskies taking a 10-3 lead early on. The Bucs couldn't gain momentum against the strong Huskie team and a 7-2 run finished off the set, 25-15, and the match, 3-0.

 

Match Two -- UMass Dartmouth

The Basics

Final: Dartmouth 3, Maritime 0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-11)

Records: Dartmouth 7-5 (2-1 LEC)

            Maritime 1-14 (0-3 MASCAC)

For The Bucs

  • Marlo Sim (Groton, CT) had four kills in the match to lead the Bucs.
  • Audrey Manning (Hanover, MA) led the Bucs in assists again i nmatch two with seven.
  • Ameena Freeman (Columbus, OH) led the match with 16 digs. 

For The Corsairs

  • Marley Alexander and Kate Wade had six kills to lead all attackers.
  • Zoe Dizenzo posted 26 assists for the Corsairs.
  • Gabriella Monico had six service aces, Devon Laing had four in the match.
  • Annika Laudemann led Dartmouth with 10 digs.

How It Happened

The Bucs went up against a strong Dartmouth team that did not let up at any point in the match. Keeping their foot on the gas all the way through the first game, the Bucs picked up some momentum with the score 15-7. Dartmouth went on to score 10 unanswerd points to take the game 25-7.

Set two went similarly with the Bucs looking like they would take the momentum of the game and then Dartmouth put together multiple big runs. The Corairs went on a 9-2 run to open the second game and after a burst from the Buccaneers, Dartmouth took hold of the game late once again scoring nine of the final 12 points of the game to take game two 25-11.

Game three was nearly a carbon copy of game two. The Buccaneers had some momentum early but could only sprinle in points as the set went on. Dartmouth continued to put together including a 9-2 run to end the game, 25-11, and the match, 3-0.

The Buccaneers remain on the road this week with a game at Dean College on Tuesday, October 5th at 6pm, then a weekend, non-conference match with Nichols on Saturday, October 9th at 12pm. All games and live stats are available at mmabucs.com
