Buccaneers Post Career Highs in Tri-Match Losses

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – The Buccaneer hosted their second tri-match of the season on Saturday with Emmanuel and NVU-Johnson making the trips to Taylor's Point to take part. In the first match of the day, the Saints took down the Bucs 3-0, and in the final match of the day the Badgers earned their second win over a MASCAC opponent this season with a 3-0 win over the Bucs.

Match One – Emmanuel

The Basics

Final: Emmanuel 3, Maritime 0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-17)

Records: Emmanuel 1-3 (0-1 GNAC)

               Maritime 0-9 (0-1 MASCAC)

For The Bucs

  • Ameena Freeman (Columbus, OH) and Tegan Murray (Newburyport, MA) each had four kills in the match. Captain Bianca Andronic (Somerset, MA) Izabella Mackintosh (Plymouth, MA) and Marlo Sim (Groton, CT) each had three kills.
  • Bianca Andronic posted a team-high 11 assists while Audrey Manning (Hanover, MA) assisted on eight Maritime points.
  • Freeman, Andronic and Manning each had two service aces to lead the match.
  • Freeman posted a career-high and match-high 23 digs while Isabelle Miazga (Rocky Hill, CT) had 13 of her own.
  • Murray had a solo block and an assisted block with Sim in the match.
  • In the final set of the match, the Bucs posted a .024 hitting percentage and were at -.043 for the match.

For The Saints

  • Sasha Hyacinthe mustered a match-high 10 kills with Kerry Shea adding seven of her own.
  • Brigid Moriarty had 24 assists in the match for the Saints and led the team with two service aces.
  • Tatiana Correia led the Saints with 17 digs, Caitlin Tannian added 11 and Sha picked up 10 digs.
  • Anna Caristi had the lone block for and a block assist.
  • Emmanuel posted a .128 hitting percentage including a match best .162 in set one.

How it Happened

Maritime led the first set to start on an attack error by Emmanuel. The game stayed close for the entirely of the set with the lead changing multiple times. Midway through the set the Bucs led 13-12 which was followed by a Saints five-point run to retake the lead 17-13. While Maritime did not lead again in the first set, they kept the game within two points. At 20-18, the Saints scored five points, including a few on Maritime errors and took a 1-0 match lead with a 25-18 first set win.

In the second set, the Bucs fell behind early and battled their way back in to the game, tying the score at 9-9. Neither team wanted to lose this set at they traded points and leads. The Buccaneers led late in the game 22-21 but were unable to hold on with Emmanuel coming back to win 25-22, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Saints took a 5-0 lead to start and went on a 12-2 run overall. The Bucs pulled back within five points late in the set, trailing 22-17. Strong play from Emmanuel finished off the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.

 

Match Two – NVU-Johnson

The Basics

Final: Johnson 3, Maritime 0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-12)

Records: Johnson 2-2

               Maritime 0-9

For The Bucs

  • Ameena Freeman and Bianca Andronic tied for the team lead with five kills in the match. Tegan Murray, Kolby Barbieri (Haverhill, MA), and Marlo Sim each added three kills.
  • Audrey Manning led the Bucs once again in the assist category with 10. Andronic had six assists.
  • Freeman and Sim each had two service aces.
  • Sim led the team with a career-high 16 digs while Freeman posted 12 and Diana Andronic (Somerset, MA) had 10.
  • The lone block in the match went to Bianca Andronic.
  • Maritime posted a season-high .114 hitting percentage in the second set of the match. They also posted a positive hitting percentage in the third set at .038. Overall, their match hitting percentage was -.010.

For The Badgers

  • Christina Betham had a match-high 14 kills while Vanessa Chaves added 12.
  • Mason Lores had 27 assists to go along with a match-high five service aces in the victory.
  • Jimmi Lynn Williams posted 23 digs for the visitors while Lores added 12.
  • Two solo blocks were credited to the Badgers, one to Chavez, the other to Natalia Medina.
  • The Badgers posted a .309 hitting percentage overall with a match-high .469 hitting percentage in the third set of the match.

How it Happened

In the first set, the Buccaneers looked solid out of the gate going up by as many as six points at one point, 13-7. Johnson ripped off seven points in a row at that point to take a 14-13 lead. Back and forth the teams went until the Badgers led 22-19. They then added the final three points they needed on a couple of mistakes by the Bucs to take the set, 25-19.

In set two, the Buccaneers played catchup midway through the game as they trailed 18-10 at one points and rattled off six points in a row and pulled back within one point, 20-19. After a kill from Betham, Lores put together a run of services that sealed the set for the Badgers by the identical score from set one, 25-19.

In the third game, the Badgers went up 6-1 early on. The Buccaneer could not seem to get anything going offensively and Johnson extended their lead out to 10, then 12 and finally 13 as they won the set, 25-12, and the match, 3-0.
