Buccaneers Fall to Bridgewater in Midweek Conference Match

BRIDGEWATER, Mass -- Volleyball player their first match after a week of no matches against a tough Bridgewater opponent in conference on Tuesday evening on the road. The Buccaneer hung tough in all three sets and were unable to come away with the win, falling to the Bears 3-0.

The Basics

Final: Bridgewater 3, Maritime 0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-11)

For The Bucs

  • Freshman Marlo Sim (Groton, CT) led the Bucs with three kills. Tegan Murray (Newbury, MA) and Kolby Barbieri (Haverhill, MA) each had two. 
  • Audrey Manning (Hanover, MA) recorded four assists to lead the team. 
  • Alexa Smith (Shippenburg, PA) tallied three service aces.
  • Ameena Freeman (Columbus, OH) racked up a match-high 16 digs defensively. Isabelle Miazga (Rocky Hill, CT) had 11 of her own.
  • Murray made a match-high three blocks.

For The Bears

  • Abigail Reardon racked up a match-high 12 kills. Sydney Rice recorded seven.
  • Savannah Quintal led the match with 11 assists and four service aces.
  • Victoria Caiano had three service aces of her own and had a team-high 15 digs. 
  • Reardon picked up the lone block for the Bears.

How It Happened

Maritime battle hard in the first set, even going out to a 10-7 lead after falling behind 7-4. The teams traded points with the Bucs not allowing the Bears to stray too far ahead after they took back the lead, 14-12. Behind a few Bear mistakes and a Manning ace, the Bucs regained a lead late, 16-15. Bridgewater then went on a 6-2 run to take a 20-17 advantage. The Bucs pulled back within one, 20-19, then fell behind 23-20 with the Bears scoring the final two points they needed to take the first game, 25-20.

The second set started off hot for the Bucs as they took an 8-3 lead out of the schute, scoring five straight from 3-3 to get to that point. Then, a Garyella Serrano ace started a 15-2 run for the Bears that game them an 18-10 lead. Bridgewater kept chipping towards 25 getting their lead up to 10, 21-11. The Bucs went on to score six of the next nine points making the score 24-17. Their comeback effort was not enough as the Bears took set two, 25-17.

The Bucs took another early lead in set three, this time a slim one at 2-0. Bridgewater then scored nine straight to go up 9-2. Maritime scored four of the nest six points to get back within five. Leading 2-0 with the match win i ntheir sights, the Bears pushed forward scoring five of seven then went on a six point streak. Maritime got to the 11 mark but not before the Bears scored 24 then the 25th to take the set, 25-11, and the match, 3-0.

What's Next

The Buccaneers will be home on Saturday at 5pm to take on Worcester State inside the Clean Harbors Center. Reminder that all spectators and visitors to campus must be vaccinated and, while inside, wear a mask at all times.
