WORCESTER, Mass. --  Sophomore Molly Kilday (Westford, Mass.) netted five goals and two assists for seven points as third-seeded Worcester State advanced in the 2013 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championships with a 13-4 quarterfinal round victory over sixth-seeded Massachusetts Maritime Tuesday evening at Coughlin Field.

The host Lancers, now 12-4 on the season, will take on second-seeded Westfield State in semi-final round play on Thursday evening at Alumni Field in Westfield, Mass. beginning at 7:00 p.m.  The visiting Buccaneers finished their second varsity intercollegiate season at 2-12 overall in earning the program’s first-ever post-season berth.

Kilday collected a hat trick in the opening 8:53 of action, as her third goal gave Worcester State the lead for good after Massachusetts Maritime senior Shelagh Hogan (North Andover, Mass.) had staked the Buccaneers to an early lead as well as a 2-2 tie.  The Lancers tallied six of the final seven markers of the first 30 minutes of play, including a pair off the stick of freshman Jackie Connors (Ashland, Mass.), to take an 8-3 advantage at the break, and the hosts iced their triumph by scoring three goals in the first 7:22 after intermission to advance.

Connors finished with a hat trick and three assists in the victory for Worcester State, which also received a marker and three helpers off the stick of freshman Kalia Chase (Northbridge, Mass.) as well as a goal and assist from junior Vicki O’Brien (Canton, Mass.).  Senior Daryl Powell (Beverly, Mass.) and sophomores Jaclyn Lawlor (Westford, Mass.) and Michelle Tully (Tewksbury, Mass.) also tallied on the night for the Lancers, who have posted one of the greatest single-season turn around in NCAA Division III history after claiming just three triumphs in 2012.

Hogan was joined in the scoring column by freshmen Janine Prokscha (Washington, Conn.) and Molly Smith (Westwood, Mass.) in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received assists from senior Anna Whittemore (Weatogue, Conn.) and freshman Shavonne Boyle (Doylestown, Pa.).  Senior Alex Chisholm (North Brookfield, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Worcester State with a three-save effort, while sophomore Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) capped her season with 11 stops in net for the Buccaneers, finishing with a conference-leading 176 on the spring.  The Lancers outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 33-13 margin for the contest while holding a 12-7 advantage in draw controls.

“I thought we played our best game of the season tonight,” Massachusetts Maritime Head Coach Leslie Bullis said following the match.  “Playing in the post-season is a great experience for a very young team, and I thought we responded to all of the challenges very well.  This is an important step for our program, and we will build on this in moving forward.”
