BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Junior Markie Apple (Pittsfield, Mass.) netted four goals to lead Fitchburg State to a 9-5 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.
Apple’s free position goal with 1:30 remaining in the opening half staked the visiting Falcons (4-8, 2-2 MASCAC) to a 3-2 advantage at the break, and after freshman Shavonne Boyle (Doylestown, Pa.) evened matters for the host Buccaneers (2-8, 1-2 MASCAC) 2:44 after intermission, Apple collected another free position tally to spark a four-goal run and give Fitchburg State the lead for good with 23:34 remaining in the match. Senior Kristin Dooley (Salem, Mass.) added two goals during the decisive run for the visitors, as Apple added two more markers in the final 13 minutes of action to account for the final score.
Senior Jessica Bartlett (Marlboro, Mass.) added two goals in the triumph for Fitchburg State, which also received a tally from freshman Sarina Sheehan (Billerica, Mass.) and an assist off the stick of junior Chelsea Roberts (Newburyport, Mass.). Boyle led the way with two goals and an assist for three points in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received two tallies from freshman Molly Smith (Westwood, Mass.) and a single marker off the stick of senior Kim Courcy (Warwick, R.I.).
Freshman Elizabeth Darrigo (Billerica, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Fitchburg State with a 14-save effort, while sophomore Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) recorded 15 stops in net for Massachusetts Maritime as the Falcons outshot the Buccaneers by a 32-27 margin while holding a 10-6 edge in draw controls for the contest.
