Sailing Finishes Fifth at Kennedy Cup

ANNAPOLIS, MD -- After securing qualification for the Kennedy Cup through the McMillan Cup in October, the Buccaneer sailing team took part in the 2021 Kennedy Cup, one of the most prestigious sailing events of the year. After a rough start on day one, the Bucs picked up the slack on Sunday to earn their third consecutive top-five finish in the event with 33 points and tied with the Naval Academy. 

Though Maritime fell to fifth due to the tie breaker with Navy, the Bucs finished a point ahead of SUNY Maritime, five points ahead of the University of Toledo, and well ahead of College of Charleston, the University of Michigan and UC San Diego. 

Inthe seven races over two days, Maritime posted four top five finishes, two seventh place finished and a disqualification in race number five. 

While Navy finished ahead of the Buccaneers on tie breaker, Merchant Marine finished ahead of both by a points. Finishing second was the University of Rhode Island on 29 points and finishing in the top spot was California Maritime Academy on 24 points.

With the victory, Cal Maritime has earned a spot in the Collegiate Sailing World Cup in France in 2022.

The Kennedy Cup marks the end of the Buccaneers fall sailing season. They will pick up in the Spring for a series of exciting events and races.
