WORCESTER, Mass. --  Freshman Matt Pelletier’s (Bradford, Mass.) two-run single highlighted a four-run fourth inning rally that propelled Massachusetts Maritime to a 5-2 victory over Worcester State in the opening game of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Tivnan Field.  The host Lancers overcame a three-run deficit to notch a 7-5 triumph in the nightcap and gain a split of the twinbill.

The visiting Buccaneers (11-16, 5-9 MASCAC) took a 1-0 second inning lead in the lid-lifter on a throwing error, and Massachusetts Maritime extended that margin to 5-0 with its fourth inning outburst, as Pelletier’s two-run safety was followed by a bases-loaded walk to senior Greg Wiggin (Marshfield, Mass.).  Pelletier scored on a wild pitch to account for the visitors’ final run of the frame and contest, as senior Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.) allowed just four hits and struck out six over five innings of work in his final collegiate start to finish the season at 2-2.  Sophomore Aram Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) joined Pelletier with two hits in the opening game victory for the Buccaneers, as junior Jared Lowe (Brimfield, Mass.) recorded the final six outs of the contest, including two via strikeout, to earn his first save of the spring.

Worcester State (22-11, 9-5 MASCAC) received an RBI double from senior Paul Rodriguez (San Antonio, Tex.) in the fourth and a bases-loaded walk to senior Nick Fluegge (Ware, Mass.) in the fifth to account for its scoring, as Levitre fanned Rodriguez to leave the bases loaded in that frame.  Six different Lancers recorded hits in the setback, as sophomore Nick Bonofiglio (Worcester, Mass.) allowed four earned runs and fanned four in 3 1/3 innings to fall to 3-2 on the mound.

Massachusetts Maritime grabbed a 3-0 third inning advantage in the nightcap when Pelletier once again scored on a wild pitch and senior Corey Murphy (East Wareham, Mass.) followed with a two-run single, but Worcester State evened matters in the bottom of the frame on Fluegge’s three-run homer, his eighth of the season.  Sophomore Nick Gezotis (Westfield, Mass.) gave the Lancers the lead for good with a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth, and the hosts plated a pair of key insurance runs in the sixth on a throwing error and an RBI single off the bat of senior Corey McDonald (Hudson, Mass.).  The Buccaneers closed back to within two in their final at-bat on RBI doubles by Levitre and fellow senior Michael Vargas (Framingham, Mass.), and the visitors loaded the bases with one out before Worcester State sophomore Shaun Slattery (Gardner, Mass.) came on to record a pair of groundouts to preserve the Lancer triumph and record his ninth save.

McDonald and Gezotis each had two hits in the nightcap victory for Worcester State, as senior Chad Kasik (Dudley, Mass.) recorded the win on the mound for the Lancers to improve to 5-2 on the season despite surrendering 11 hits and five runs.  Wiggin rapped out three hits in his final collegiate contest in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received two hits each from Levitre and fellow senior Andrew Saari (Framingham, Mass.).  Freshman Keith Sanchez (Monroe Township, N.J.) suffered the setback on the mound for the Buccaneers to fall to 1-3 on the season.

Worcester State hosts MIT in a non-league outing on Sunday afternoon at Tivnan Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.  Massachusetts Maritime Head Coach Bob Corradi will enter his 40th season on the Buccaneer bench in 2012 with 524 career victories.
