LEOMINSTER, Mass. --  Senior John Phelan (Walpole, Mass.) and sophomore Cody Bamforth (Vernon, Conn.) each collected four hits and a home run to lead Fitchburg State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime on Monday afternoon by scores of 4-0 in the opener and 8-2 in the nightcap in games played at McLaughlin Field.

The host Falcons (13-13, 3-5 MASCAC) got the only runs they would need in the opener on Bamforth’s first homer of the season that was followed by an RBI single off the bat of senior Nick Rocheleau (Leominster, Mass.) in the bottom of the second, and Fitchburg State tacked on single runs in the third and fifth frames, respectively, on sophomore Jeff Boice’s (Glastonbury, Conn.) and a wild pitch to close out the scoring.  Sophomore Tynan Flegg (Calgary, Alta.) allowed just two hits to the visiting Buccaneers (9-11, 3-5 MASCAC), a single and double off the bat of senior Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.), while fanning five to improve to 4-3 on the mound for the hosts, who received two hits each from Phelan, Bamforth and Boice.  Senior Corey Murphy (East Wareham, Mass.) went the distance on the mound in the opening setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as he allowed three earned runs and struck out three in falling to 1-3 on the season.

Fitchburg State jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead in the nightcap on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by freshman David Mason (Leominster, Mass.), but the Buccaneers sliced their deficit to one in the third on sophomore Aram Mulhern’s (Taunton, Mass.) first home run of the season and evened matters in the fifth on junior William Shouldice’s (Rutland, Vt.) fourth round-tripper of the spring.  The Falcons took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth on junior Frank Yavorosky’s (Westminster, Mass.) single and plated four more tallies in the frame on a Boice RBI groundout, a two-run double off the bat of senior Dave Alexander (Torrington, Conn.) and an error.  Phelan belted his second homer of the spring in the bottom of the sixth to cap the hosts’ scoring.

Yavorosky collected three hits in the nightcap triumph for Fitchburg State, which also received a pair of safeties from Phelan and Bamforth as part of an 11-hit attack in support of senior Marshall Miller (Greenfield, Mass.), who went the distance in allowing six hits and striking out three to improve to 3-0 for the Falcons.  Mulhern rapped out two of Massachusetts Maritime’s safeties in the nightcap setback, as freshman Keith Sanchez (Monroe Township, N.J.) allowed three earned runs and fanned two to fall to 1-2 on the mound for the Buccaneers.

Massachusetts Maritime will host Wentworth in a non-league outing on Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:00 p.m., as Wednesday’s scheduled Buccaneer contest with Lasell has been cancelled and will not be re-scheduled.  Fitchburg State heads to Lynn, Mass. on Tuesday evening to take on Fisher in a non-league outing at 7:00 p.m.
