BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Sophomore Zachary Sullivan (Barnstable, Mass.) rapped out three hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 4-1 nightcap victory and a sweep of a non-league college baseball doubleheader of Lyndon State Saturday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field. The Buccaneers used a two-out, two strike single off the bat of senior Greg Wiggin (Marshfield, Mass.) in the bottom of the eighth inning of the opener to claim a 4-3 triumph in the first outing of the twinbill.
The host Buccaneers (2-3) overcame an early 1-0 deficit in the opener to even matters at 1-1 in the bottom of the third on a suicide squeeze by senior Michael Vargas (Framingham, Mass.), but the visiting Hornets took a 2-1 cushion in the top of the fourth when freshman Cody Gage (Newport, Vt.) scored on an error. Massachusetts Maritime rallied with two tallies in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Aram Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) and an RBI single by freshman Ben Maher (Plymouth, Mass.) to take a 3-2 lead, but Lyndon State forged the extra frame by evening matters in the top of the seventh on a one-out double by senior Jake Ainsworth (Fairfax, Vt.), setting up the hosts’ heroics in the bottom of the eighth, as Mulhern singled with one out and was pinch-run for by freshman Brendan O’Kane (Pocasset, Mass.), who advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored the deciding run on Wiggin’s single to center.
Maher collected two of Massachusetts Maritime’s six hits in the opener, as fellow freshman Nick Thomas (Brockton, Mass.) earned his first career victory for the Buccaneers by fanning three in two innings of work. Senior Corey Murphy (East Wareham, Mass.) allowed just one hit and an unearned run in four innings of work for the hosts, who also received a pair of scoreless frames to go with three strikeouts from junior Jared Lowe (Brimfield, Mass.). Freshman Kyle Whitworth (Brattleboro, Vt.) collected two of Lyndon State’s four hits in the opener, as sophomore Shane Fleury (Plainfield, Vt.) suffered the setback on the mound in relief of junior Shane O’Donnell (Groton, Vt.), who allowed an unearned run and fanned seven over the first six innings for the Hornets.
Lyndon State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat of the nightcap on an RBI single off the bat of junior Shawn Lonardelli (Lebanon, Conn.), but Massachusetts Maritime evened matters in the third on an RBI double by Sullivan, who then snapped the tie with a two-out RBI single in the fifth that followed a double off the bat of senior Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.). Mulhern followed with an RBI double of his own to extend the Buccaneer lead to 3-1, and a suicide squeeze off the bat of senior Andrew Saari (Framingham, Mass.) in the bottom of the sixth closed out the scoring.
Sullivan finished the day with four hits in the sweep for Massachusetts Maritime, as Lowe earned his first win of the season for the hosts with three more shutout innings to go with three strikeouts in relief of senior Eric Moreschi (Quincy, Mass.), who allowed an unearned run over the first three innings of work. Thomas earned his first career save by pitching a scoreless seventh for the Buccaneers, who rapped out seven hits in the nightcap. Sophomore Issac Earle (Vernon, Vt.) suffered the setback on the mound in the second contest for the Hornets, allowing a pair of earned runs and fanning five over five innings of work to fall to 0-2 on the season, as Lyndon State collected four hits in the nightcap setback.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Rivier in a non-league doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at Noon, while Lyndon State will be idle until next Saturday when the Hornets travel to New London, Conn. to take on Mitchell in a non-league twinbill that begins at 2:00 p.m.
