BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Roman Mondalto (Amesbury, Mass.) and sophomore Bret Siflinger (Framingham, Mass.) combined to allow four hits and strike out 18 in hurling back-to-back complete game shutouts in lifting Westfield State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime on Friday afternoon by scores of 3-0 in the opener and 2-0 in the nightcap in games played at Commodore Hendy Field.

Mondalto scattered three hits and struck out seven in going the distance in the opener for the visiting Owls (16-16, 9-1 MASCAC), who scored all of their runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by senior Pete Grillo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and a run-scoring double off the bat of senior Sean Geary (South Yarmouth, Mass.) that sandwiched a fielding error.  Geary collected two of Westfield State’s six hits in the opening triumph, as Mondalto improved to 5-0 on the season with the victory.  Senior Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.) rapped out a double in the first setback for the host Buccaneers (9-14, 3-7 MASCAC), who also received singles from sophomore Zachary Sullivan (Barnstable, Mass.) and freshman Matt Pelletier (Bradford, Mass.).  Sophomore Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.) suffered the setback on the mound for Massachusetts Maritime, allowing two earned runs and fanning six over six innings to fall to 3-2 on the season.

Siflinger allowed just a lead-off single to sophomore Aram Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) in the bottom of the fifth frame of the nightcap for Westfield State, as the Owls plated both of their runs in the third on an RBI triple by sophomore Andrew Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.) and a run-scoring single off the bat of junior Matt Kelly (Weymouth, Mass.).  Mulhern’s safety helped create Siflinger’s lone jam of the day, as he escaped a bases-loaded situation with one of his 11 strikeouts.  Kelly collected two of the Owls’ four nightcap hits in support of Siflinger, who improved to 4-2 on the season with the complete-game effort, while Levitre suffered the setback on the mound for the Buccaneers in fanning a pair over 3 2/3 innings of work to fall to 1-2 on the spring.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Bridgewater State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 2:00 p.m., while Westfield State travels to North Adams, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon for a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference twinbill with MCLA that begins at 2:00 p.m.
