How It Happened

Set number one was a marathon with the teams playing well over 25 points. Salem took an early lead and extended that lead to four points, 8-4, before the Buccaneers came sailing back to tie the game at 12-12. The Buccaneers would not take a lead until they went up 18-17 but could not extend that lead past two points. Late in the set, the teams went back and forth with Salem even retaking a two-point lead, 22-20. Maritime fought back again and the teams traded off until the Vikings led 18-17. From there, the Buccaneers, after a kill from Strozik, went on to take the next two points, three in a row, with Madeleine Salinas on the serve and won the set 30-28 thanks to a final point ace from Salinas.

Up 1-0 in the match, the Buccaneers started the second set off on the right foot taking an early lead, 7-5, and with Salinas on the serve again, Maritime ran out to an eight point lead, 14-6. They never relinquished the lead in the game, eventually going up more than 10 points on the Vikings and went on to win the set by 12 points, 25-13. The Buccaneers held a 2-0 match lead after two sets.

To start the third set, the Bucs went up 5-1. They held their lead and kept it around four until the teams were at a 12-8 Buccaneers score. Then, the Vikings took control of the game and flipped the score to take their own four-point lead, 19-15. The Buccaneers got themselves up over 20 points but it was too late as Salem State held a 24-21 lead. Thanks to an attack error from Maritime, Salem went on to win the set, 25-21, and climb back into the match now down 2-1.

In set four, Maritime took a very early 2-0 lead but the Vikings took that away and went up 6-3. The Buccaneers retook a lead in the teens and were up 13-11 in the middle of the set. Momentum shifted again in favor of the Vikings and they retook the lead themselves at 18-16. Salem allowed just three points down the stretch in the fourth set and reached the 25-point mark to take the set, 25-19, and tie the match at 2-2.

In the 15-point fifth and deciding set of the match, the Buccaneers had their best set with a .222 hitting percentage. Thanks to the lack of unforced errors, Maritime led wire to wire in the final set. They went up 4-1 early, and extended their lead to five late, 12-7. Then, up 14-7, on the final point of the match, Erin Donlan made a terrific effort to dig a ball off the court that set up Narodowg for a great set to Hailey Rumlow who hammered the final point of the night home. The Bucs won the set, 15-7, and the match, 3-2.
