Brain Notches 12 Kills As Volleyball Drops Senior Day Doubleheader To Westfield State

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Kendyl Haney (Ashland, Mass.) notched 10 kills to lead Westfield State to a 3-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the opening match of a doubleheader played Saturday afternoon at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center, as the visiting Owls also swept a 3-0 decision from the Buccaneers in the non-league nightcap.

 

Senior Casey Howe (Chelmsford, Mass.) added eight kills in Westfield State’s (14-15, 4-2 MASCAC), 25-10, 25-13, 25-11 opening league triumph, while senior Shannon Shea (Chelmsford, Mass.) collected six kills and nine digs for the winners.  Sophomore Courtney Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) registered 26 set assists and a pair of service aces as well for the Owls, who also received 11 digs and nine service aces from freshman Lizzie Taylor (Medfield, Mass.), seven digs from sophomore Tiara Vaughn (Teaticket, Mass.) and five service aces from junior Danielle Hunt (Burlington, Mass.).

 

Junior Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) notched four kills and four service aces in the opening setback for Massachusetts Maritime (4-21, 0-6 MASCAC), which also received three kills and three digs each from seniors Emily Calnan (Hingham, Mass.) and Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.).  Juniors Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.) and Melissa Harris (Scituate, Mass.) each added four set assists and combined for 11 digs for the Buccaneers, who also received seven digs from junior Stephanie O’Connor (Westwood, Mass.).

 

Freshman Karolyn Higgins (Billerica, Mass.) registered 10 kills in Westfield State’s 25-21, 25-12, 25-13 non-league victory in the second contest, as the Owls also received six kills each from junior Kelsey Reilly (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and freshman Meri Lessing (Melrose, Mass.).  Taylor (14) and Hunt (11) combined for 25 digs for the visitors, who also received five kills from sophomore Megan Hall (Hampden, Mass.) to go with 26 set assists and seven digs from sophomore Brigid Murray (Norfolk, Mass.).

 

Brain collected eight kills and four digs in the nightcap setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received five kills from freshman Jennifer Roy (Attleboro, Mass.) as well as three kills and nine digs from Klangos.  Harris added 12 set assists and six digs for the Buccaneers, who also received six set assists and six digs from Ethier as well as 13 digs from freshman Kaleigh Hoffman (Noblesville, Ind.).

 

Westfield State will be seeded third in the upcoming Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference championships, as the Owls will host sixth-seeded Worcester State in quarterfinal round play on Wednesday evening in Westfield, Mass. beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Today’s contests were the final matches of the season for Massachusetts Maritime, which posted its highest single-season win total in nine years under the guidance of first-year Head Coach Melanie Appleman.
