BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Natasia Franklin (Windsor, Conn.) registered 14 kills, while sophomore Mary Owen (Houston, Tex.) added 10 kills and 20 digs as Pine Manor rallied from a 2-1 deficit to post a wild 3-2 non-league college volleyball victory over Massachusetts Maritime by game scores of 25-23, 21-25, 24-26, 29-27 and 18-16 in a match played Thursday evening at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center.

 

Freshman Jenna Hall (Glens Falls, N.Y.) notched nine kills and eight digs for the visiting Gators (3-8), who held a five point lead (24-19) in the fourth set only to see the host Buccaneers (1-9) rally to even matters on a five-point run by freshman Kaleigh Hoffman (Noblesville, Ind.).  The teams then traded service errors before a pair of errors enabled Pine Manor to even sets, and the visitors took a four point lead (8-4) in the final set only to see Massachusetts Maritime use a 7-2 run to take an 11-10 advantage.  The teams traded four straight match points, as the hosts had a 16-15 edge before an attack error evened matters once again, and a pair of Franklin service aces closed out the Gators’ triumph.

 

Sophomore Ashley Whiteshield (Seward, Ak.) added 35 set assists, eight digs, seven kills and six service aces in the win for Pine Manor, which also received 37 digs and four service aces from senior Carline Kirksey-Almond (Lawrence, Mass.) as well as 15 digs from sophomore Rachael Julien (Brockton, Mass.).  Senior Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.) registered a double-double effort of a career-high 15 kills and 15 digs in the setback for the Buccaneers, who also received a career-best nine kills from freshman Jennifer Roy (Attleboro, Mass.).  Junior Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.) added a career-high 29 set assists and 13 digs for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received 22 digs from junior Stephanie O’Connor (Westwood, Mass.) to go with 16 digs and seven service aces from Hoffman.  Junior Melissa Harris (Scituate, Mass.) collected a career-best 12 digs for the hosts, who also received a combined eight kills and 11 digs from senior Emily Calnan (Hingham, Mass.) and junior Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.).

 

Massachusetts Maritime travels to North Adams, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on MCLA in its Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference opener at Noon before squaring off with Bay Path in a non-league outing at 2:00 p.m., while Pine Manor hosts Maine-Fort Kent in a non-league match on Sunday morning in Chestnut Hill, Mass. beginning at 11:00 a.m.
