FINAL:              WORCESTER STATE 1, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 0

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Briana Moreno’s (Lynn, Mass.) goal 10:03 into the contest held up as the game-winner and lifted Worcester State to a 1-0 victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer opener for both teams Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Moreno converted a pass from junior Ashleigh Howland (Wilmington, Mass.) from 10 yards out for her first goal of the season for the visiting Lancers (2-4, 1-0 MASCAC), and senior Vanessa O’Donnell (Worcester, Mass.) made the stand up with a pair of saves in net to notch her second win and first shutout of the fall.  The host Buccaneers (4-2, 0-1 MASCAC), who saw their school-record four-match winning streak come to an end, had several chances to even matters in the second half, including a pair of shots by sophomore Madison Taylor (Longmeadow, Mass.) that sailed just wide in the early stages after intermission.

Freshman Sara Coffey (Norton, Mass.) made 13 saves in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as Worcester State outshot the Buccaneers by a 26-3 margin overall (14-2 on goal) while holding a 9-3 edge in corner kicks for the evening.

Both teams will be idle until next Saturday, September 24th when they resume Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference play, as Massachusetts Maritime heads to Bridgewater, Mass. for a league match with Bridgewater State at Noon while Worcester State travels to Framingham, Mass. for a conference clash with Framingham State beginning at 4:00 p.m.
