FINAL:              WESTFIELD STATE 5, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 0

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Shannon McCleary (Quincy, Mass.) netted a goal and an assist to lead Westfield State to a 5-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Sophomore Nicole Chretien (North Attleboro, Mass.) gave the visiting Owls (8-7-2, 5-1-1 MASCAC) the only goal they would need in the 27th minute of play, and junior Michaela St. Cyr’s (Saugus, Mass.) third tally of the season with 4:45 remaining in the half extended that margin to 2-0 at the break.  McCleary staked Westfield State to a 3-0 edge in the 56th minute of action, and the visitors iced their triumph on senior Kate Matroni’s (Hampden, Mass.) sixth marker of the fall in the 65th minute that was followed just 2:48 later by fellow senior Taylor Grijalva’s (Stratham, N.H.) fourth goal of the year to account for the final margin.

Freshman Bella Eduardo (Springfield, Mass.) notched a pair of assists in the win for the Owls, who also received helpers from senior Hannah Zannini (Amesbury, Mass.) and freshman Gianna Moncecchi (Windsor, Mass.).  Sophomore Natalia Falcone (Sutton, Mass.) picked up her eighth victory and sixth shutout of the season with a five-save effort in goal for Westfield State, while freshman Sara Coffey (Norton, Mass.) made a career-high 14 stops in net in the setback for the host Buccaneers (5-10-1, 0-7 MASCAC).  The Owls outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 24-6 margin overall (19-5 on goal) and held an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks for the contest.

Westfield State will await its seeding in the upcoming Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference championships, which begin on Tuesday with quarterfinal round action.  The Owls are currently tied for first place in the league standings with Worcester State, which closes out its regular season tomorrow at Bridgewater State.  Tonight’s match marked the season finale for Massachusetts Maritime, which established a school single-season record for victories this fall.
