The Massachusetts Maritime football team kicks off the season Thurdsay against N.Y. Maritime in Buzzards Bay, determined to improve on last year’s finish of 5-4.

Coach Jeremy Cameron has 16 starters returning to this year’s squad, including John Moriarty , a senior offensive tackle from Wilmington, and Reynard Ortiz , a junior linebacker from Lowell.

“Reynard has emerged as one of our top defenders, as he is able to use his speed and strength to read plays exceptionally well,” Cameron said. “He has had the opportunity to learn from some outstanding linebackers that have been in our program over the past two years and has become a team leader.”

Moriarty returns as a key piece to the offensive line, one that helped the Maritime offense produce 520.7 yards of offense per game in 2012.

“John has really developed into one of the best offensive linemen in our conference,” Cameron said.

“His size and quickness enable him to set a tone for what we are looking to execute on each play, and the example he has set both on the field and in the classroom makes him another solid member of our program.”
