The awards are rolling in for Marshfield native Kevin Kwedor after the left-hander tossed the first perfect game in the 42-year history of the Mass. Maritime baseball program with a 4-0 whitewash of Mass. College of Liberal Arts on April 21 at Hendy Field in Buzzards Bay.
The historic win, which featured six strikeouts and 60 of his 89 pitches for strikes, came appropriately enough on Patriots Day. The performance earned the 20-year-old Kwedor Division 3 National Pitcher of the Week in voting by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
“Definitely ended on a positive note,” said Kwedor, who is majoring in marine safety and environmental protection. “The first out was a nice diving catch by center fielder Bobby Lee of Braintree, and the last out of the first inning was another diving catch by Greg Downs (Marshfield). It wasn’t too windy. My 2-seam (fastball) was really working for me.”
The Buccaneers just missed the last MASCAC Tournament slot and finished at 15-15.
