Cooney Named As MASCAC Baseball Co-Pitcher Of Week

Massachusetts Maritime junior righthander Zac Cooney was named as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week on Sunday evening for his efforts in the Buccaneers’ 11-0 league victory at Fitchburg State yesterday afternoon.

A native of East Bridgewater, Mass. and a graduate of Cardinal Spellman High School, Cooney tossed a complete-game four-hit shutout and struck out three to lift Head Coach Bob Corradi’s squad to a split of the conference twinbill, as he threw 51 of his 75 pitches for strikes.  With the win, Cooney improved to a team-best 5-1 on the season and lowered his earned run average to 1.14, as he has allowed just four earned runs and struck out 24 in 31 2/3 innings pitched while holding opponents to a .191 batting average.  Cooney, who is averaging 6.82 strikeouts per nine innings, shared this week’s honor with Framingham State freshman Michael Andrews.

Massachusetts Maritime, which stands at 10-11 overall and 2-4 in MASCAC action after Saturday’s split, heads to Bridgewater, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon for a conference doubleheader with rival Bridgewater State that begins at 2:00 p.m. EDT.
