FINAL:                   WENTWORTH 8, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 7

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Steve Glover (Marstons Mills, Mass.) netted a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winner with 4:03 remaining in the third quarter, as Wentworth held off a late rally to post an 8-7 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Thursday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The visiting Leopards (3-2) scored four of the first five goals of the match, including a man-down marker off the stick of sophomore Tim Parlato (Needham, Mass.), but the host Buccaneers (3-2) closed back to within one with a pair of tallies from sophomore Sean Staples (Norwell, Mass.) and freshman Steven Anderson (Crownsville, Md.) in the opening 2:59 of the second frame.  Wentworth regained a three-goal lead (6-3) at the break with a pair of scores in the final 4:57 of the half, including a man-up tally by junior Michael Cushera (Waltham, Mass.), and after Anderson’s second goal of the night 4:13 after intermission sliced Massachusetts Maritime’s deficit to two, markers by Cushera and Glover that came 1:11 apart gave the visitors their largest lead of the night at 8-4.  Freshman Sam Jarvis’s (Laurel Springs, N.J.) goal with 55 seconds remaining in the third quarter allowed the hosts to close back to within three, and the Buccaneers crept back to within a goal on a pair of tallies by sophomore Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.) and junior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) that came 29 seconds apart late in the final stanza but could get no closer, as Wentworth forced a turnover with 53 seconds remaining and ran out the clock to seal its triumph.

Junior Ryan Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) added a goal and three assists for four points in the win for the Leopards, who also received markers off the sticks of junior Dillon Lynch (Southwick, Mass.) and freshman Sam Bonsaint (Hampton, N.H.) as well as helpers from senior Chris Kipp (Scarborough, Maine) and freshman Mike Coakley (Flemington, N.J.).  McLean joined Anderson with two goals in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a goal and assist from Staples as well as two helpers each from junior Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass.) and sophomore Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.).

Senior Jared Proulx (Nashua, N.H.) picked up the win in goal with a six save effort for Wentworth, while senior Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) made five stops in the opening half of action for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received five saves from freshman Keison Cunningham (Weymouth, Mass.) over the final 30 minutes of play.  The Leopards outshot the Buccaneers by a 31-23 margin for the contest and controlled the draw by winning 16 of 19 face offs on the evening.
