Buccaneers Sink Vikings in Conference Play

SALEM, Mass -- The Buccaneers traveled to the North Shore of Massachusetts on Tuesday to take on Salem State in Conference. The Buccaneers led big early and Salem closed the gap early in the second half but the Buccaneers held off the surge and pulled away in the fourth, winning by a final of 16-9. The win marks the first in conference for the Bucs this season and the first conference win for first-year head coach Mikayla Correia.

Maritime

  • Cassie Llewellyn scored seven times for the Bucs in the win. Freshman Sarah Naar added four goals. Lindsy Durgin netted three in the win.
  • Allie Dickinson  and Caleigh Tompkins each scored once.
  • Llewellyn assisted on three goals totalling 10 points in the game.
  • Durgin recorded two assists and had Katie SmileyDickinson, and Naar all had one assist.
  • Llewellyn and Smiley led the Bucs in ground balls with four apiece.

Salem

  • Aislinn Bennett scored three times to lead the Vikings. Kenzie Currey and Jenna Wells each scored twice. Megan Parthum and Laura Young both scored once.
  • Young picked up three assists in the game. Kaia Hollingsworth assisted on two goals and Bennett added one.
  • Nora Bradley led the team in ground balls with four.
  • Bennet had a game-high seven draw controls in the loss.
  • Defensively, Olivia Henke caused five turnovers for the hosts.
  • In total, Salem picked up 20 ground balls, converted eight of 11 clears, won 16 draw controls, scored on one of nine free position shots, and took 32 total shots in the game.

How It Happened

Naar scored first to put the Buccaneers on the board 34 seconds into the game. Salem tied the score at 1-1 on a goal from Currey. The Bucs proceeded to go on a four-goal run with three goals from Llewellyn and a goal from Naar to take a 5-1 lead with just over six minutes left in the first quarter. The Vikings pulled back within three goals with a Hollingsworth score and Llewellyn scored the final goal of the first at 3:47. Maritime led at the end of one, 6-2.

Durgin netted the first goal of the second quarter from Llewellyn to put the Bucs up five, 7-2. Parthum scored for Salem at 11:03 of the second, the third goal of the game for the Vikes. The Bucs scored two goals, at 9:11 on a power play and then nearly eight minutes later at 1:48 on a second from Durgin. The hosts scored three times in the final 1:28 of the second, including a goal just before the final whistle of the half, and trailed the Buccaneers 9-6 at the break.

Salem scored the first two goals of the second half to pull within one goal, 9-8. The Bucs reached double digits and then some as they rattled off three goals with a goal each from Dickinson, Naar and Llewellyn. Maritime led 12-8 with 2:40 left in the third. Salem scored one more in the quarter at 2:28 from Wells to bring the score to 12-9, a three-goal lead the Buccaneers took to the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, Maritime held the Vikings to no goals and scored four of their own with one from Tompkins, one from Durgin and two from Llewellyn to close out the game and the win for the Buccaneers, 16-9, over Salem.
