Women's Lacrosse Keeps Score Close on Senior Night in Conference Loss to Bridgewater

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Women's lacrosse hosted Bridgewater State on Tuesday in conference play and it was senior night for Cassie LlewellynAlly Reddish, and Abbie Lelievre. The Bucs kept it close most of the game and lost by three, 18-15, scoring the most goals against Bridgewater they have scored in program history.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Cassie Llewellyn scored seven times to lead all scorers in the game. Allie Dickinson added four goals and Lindsy Durgin and MASCAC Rookie of the Week Sarah Naar each scored twice. 
  • Llewellyn, Dickinson, and Naar all recorded one assist.
  • Llewellyn led the way on the draw with 10 draw controls.
  • Defensively, Llewellyn also led all players with four caused turnovers.
  • In total, Maritime picked up 22 ground balls, were 13-of-18 on clearances, won 19 craw controls, went 4-for-10 on free position shots, and took 36 total shots in the game.

Bridgewater

  • Erin McIntyre led the Bears in scoring with five goals. Meredith Sylvia, Savannah Herrington, and Camryn Gonsalves all scored three times. Katy Shaw added two Goals. Kaylei Joseph and Hannah Bowlby each scored once.
  • Gonsalves tallied six assists in the game. Silva had two helpers, and Katie Lamothe, Melanie McClay, and Sylvia all had one assist.
  • Bridget Lane led the team in ground balls with five. 
  • Herrington won six draw controls to lead Bridgewater. 
  • Defensively, three players caused two turnovers for the Bears.
  • In total, Bridgewater picked up 27 ground balls, were 15-of-23 on clearances, won 18 draw controls, scored four times on nine free position attempts, and took 31 total shots in the game.

How It Happened

Each team scored in the first 2:05 five of the game with a Bears goal from McIntyre and a Bucs goal from Dickinson. Bridgewater then went on a three goal run to take an early 4-1 lead. The Buccaneers closed the gap with two Llewellyn goals to make it 4-3. Bridgeater scored at 4:05 to retake a two-goal lead, 5-3 and Maritime tied the game with under 30 seconds to play with goals from Durgin and Dickinson. With the score 5-5, Herrington closed out the first quarter with a goal with nine second left to give the Bears a 6-5 lead after one.

In the second, Bridgewater came out firing, scoring four times to take a 10-5 lead over Maritime. Naar broke up the party with a goal of her own at 6:30 to run the score to 10-6. Bridgewater scored two more times to close out the scoring in the first half, taking a 12-6 lead at the break.

The third quarter began with another Bridgewater goal from Gonsalves. Llewellyn netted another for the Bucs at 13:05 to get within six goals, 13-7. Bridgewater scored at 12:51 to double up the Bucs 14-7 and then it took over six minutes but the Bears scored again at 6:01 to make the score 15-7. Maritime went on a three-goal run from 5:03 to 1:01 of the third with a goal from Dickinson and two from Llewellyn to reach double digits and get within five, 15-10. Herrington, again, closed out a quarter with a goal at 18 seconds and Bridgewater led 16-10 at the end of three.

The Bucs outscored the Bears in the fourth and started the scoring with goals from Llewellyn and Naar to get within four goals, 16-12. McIntyre scored for Bridgewater 20 seconds after Naars goal to go back up five, 17-12. Llewellyn scored her seventh at 7:34 and Herrington matched at 6:49. Down 18-13, The Bucs pushed to get closed in the final seven minutes. They mustered two goals, each on power plays, from Durgin and Dickinson but that would be all they got falling to the Bears by a final of 18-15.

The Bucs will be back home on Friday, March 29th, to take on Westfield State in conference play at 7pm.
