Women's Lax Moves to 2-0 with Big Win over Emerson

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Coming off of a 10-point win in their season opener against Regis, the Bucs women's lacrosse team kept their winning ways going on Saturday with an 18-7 win over Emerson. Senior Captain Cassie Llewellyn netted seven goals in the win.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Llewellyn led all players in the game with seven goals.
  • Lindsy Durgin stepped up and scored six times in the win.
  • Freshman Sarah Naar netted five goals and now has 10 on the season.

Emerson

  • Lauren Longstreet scored a team-high three goals in the loss. Maddy Reyes added two and Bree Biesiadecki and Grace Denahy each had one.
  • Longstreet picked up two assists in the game. Callie Krosin, Ava DelliCompagni and Danehy all had one helper.
  • Reyes picked up a game-high six ground balls.
  • DelliCompagni led the Lions in draw controls with seven. 
  • Defensively, eight different Lions caused turnovers in the loss.
  • In total, Emerson picked up 26 ground balls, were 11-for-16 on clearances, won 11 draw controls, went 1-for-2 on free position shots, and took 20 shots total.

How It Happened

Maritime picked up where they left off Wednesday in Saturday's matchup scoring the first four goals of the game, all in the first seven minutes of the half. Naar scored the first and the second goals, both assisted by Dickingson. Llewellyn scored her first with 8:15 left in the first and Naar added a third, from Durgin, at 7:37. The Bucs led 4-0 midway through the quarter. Emerson scored their lone goal of the period on a powerplay as DelliCompagni found Longstreet for the score. Maritime went on to score two more, one from Durgin and one from Llewellyn, in the quarter and led the Lions at the end of one, 6-1.

Emerson found some momentum in the second scoring the first two goals of the quarter to cut the Buccaneers lead to three goals, 6-3. Naar extended the lead back to four with her fourth of the game at 6:40 of the second. Down 7-3, Emerson scored two more unanswered to get back within two goals, 7-5, with five to play before the break. The Bucs proceeded to score four unanswered, two from Llewellyn, one apiece from Naar and Durgin. The hosts led the Lions 11-5 at the half.

There were four goals in the third quarter, two from each team. Emerson scored the first two at 9:47 from Longstreet and the second at 6:33 from Danehy. The Bucs still led by four, 11-7. In the final six minutes of the third, the Bucs defense held off the Lions and scored two more times, both from the stick of Durgin, one on a powerplay, and Maritime took a 13-7 lead into the fourth.

It was all Maritime in the final period of play as there were five goals, all from the Bucs. Llewellyn scored the first three, two from free position and another unassisted. Then, Durgin scored the final two of the game, both on power plays, to seal the 18-7 victory for the Bucs and move them to 2-0 on the season.
