FINAL:              SIMMONS 16, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 9

BOSTON, Mass. --  Freshman Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.) netted four goals and four assists for eight points to lead Simmons to a 16-9 non-league college women’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Winsor Field.

The host Sharks (3-2) overcame an early 1-0 deficit with six unanswered goals, including all four of Bragg’s tallies, in less than 10 minutes of action, but the visiting Buccaneers (2-2) responded with three straight markers of their own that included a pair off the stick of senior Molly Smith (Westwood, Mass.) to close back two with just over 14 minutes to play in the half.  The squads traded two scores each in the final 12:51 of action, as Simmons grabbed an 8-6 edge at the break and netted three unanswered tallies in the opening 9:18 after intermission to take an 11-16 advantage, with two of those goals coming from senior Ashley Sheehan (North Attleboro, Mass.).  Massachusetts Maritime again responded with three of the game’s next four scores, as the visitors closed back to within three on freshman Meghan Doherty’s (Malden, Mass.) marker with 6:31 remaining, but the hosts iced their triumph by netting the last four goals of the day, including two off the stick of senior Alexa Faria (Cumberland, R.I.), to account for the final margin.

Sophomore Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) added four goals and an assist to finish with five points in the win for Simmons, which also received four tallies from Sheehan to go with a pair of markers and a helper off the stick of freshman Analise Giarrusso (Hingham, Mass.).  Sophomore Kiera Kirkaldy (Middlebury, Vt.) and freshman Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) notched two assists each for the Sharks, who also received a helper from sophomore Jolene Potter (Readfield, Maine).

Sophomore Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.) scored four goals and added an assist to finish with five points in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, while Smith collected an assist to end the day with three points for the Buccaneers.  Juniors Ashley Solari (Sandwich, Mass.) and Christina Murphy (Forestdale, Mass.) each chipped in with a marker and helper for the visitors, who also received an assist from freshman Jessica Neal (Kingston, Mass.).

Freshman Kenzie Rogers (Bourne, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with a five save effort for Simmons, while sophomore Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, Mass.) made 14 stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Sharks outshot the Buccaneers by a 46-22 margin overall (30-14 on goal) and forced 29 turnovers.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts SUNY-Purchase in a non-league outing on Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Simmons entertains Curry in a non-league on Tuesday evening at Winsor Field that begins at 8:00 p.m.
